On my 97, in the space between the front rear door is a strip of black vinyl (?) sheet that is suppose to kinda fill or mask the gap. This strip runs from the bottom of the window to the top of the door in height. Anyway, the vinyl strip is wrinkled and warped, I am assuming from heat/sun. I'm wondering if this is this a common problem, and has anyone figured out a good fix for this? My thoughts are if I get replacements from Ford, they will just warp and wrinkle after a few months in the summer heat. Granted they appear to be just cosmetic pieces, but it is kinda irritating to look at when I open my doors.
Never seen or heard of this problem and it's pretty darn hot down here in South Texas. I've got a '00 and my dad's got a '98 and neither have this problem. I say replace them and enjoy for a many more years.
The same thing happened on my '99. The rubber seemed to be melted. It had hardened and deformed, it also was rubbing the paint off of the B pillar. I took a razor blade and cut it off. I do not hear any wind noise or rattles from the area so I guess it worked OK. Other option is to buy a new one from the dealership I guess.
Thanks for the info. I think I will remove them as they are marring the paint on the pillars, same as exp_cop's did. I will replace them depending on what kind of ransom $$ the dealer wants for new ones. As an alternative, I came up with the idea last night of removing the old vinyl strips and then painting the pillar black, but I'm still thinking about that one as it might not be worth the trouble. Anyway, thanks again for the info and advice.
