Clearance Issues with 4.5" Backspace Wheels

New forum member, here. New to fixing old cars and trucks as well.

I bought a 73 F-250 4WD a couple months ago. Two owner truck with no body panel rust. Needs some mechanical work, some patch work on the floor pans, and a new interior.

As the thread title would suggest, I'm having trouble with some new wheels I purchased. They are the Pro Comp 1069 6882, which are 16x8 with 4.5" backspace, and they are making decent contact with the tie rods. There are threads on this forum where others have claimed to have success with these wheels and the American Racing Outlaw II, which are also 4.5" backspace. The truck does have the stock power assist steering, so not sure if that results in a unique tie rod setup. Any thoughts on whats going on here? Everything seems to be stock.

My current thought is to purchase 1/4" wheel spacers (probably only need 1/8" to clear the tie rods) and replace the wheel studs with ones 1/4" longer. Is this a viable resolution to the issue, or am I asking for trouble? Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You should be good using quality spacers, as for the longer studs it would be a good idea I am sure, but if you went from steel wheels to aluminum or alloy wheels they are thicker and 1/4 may not be enough. If you use stock lug nuts and you have the stud sticking out past the nut you'll be okay that way too. Or just use a stock one to see if its long enough.

Good call on the thicker aluminum wheels. I have a generic stock lugnut for a 1/2x20 so that should help gauge how much larger of a stud I need. Thanks for the advice.
