I'm getting ready to swap in a 460 in my '56. I'm looking to find out what else, besides the engine, should I address while the old engine is out.
Obviously a total strip down is easiest, but I don't have the room at the moment to do that. I'm looking to get it driving how I want, then when I can take it apart properly, make it pretty.
Do I need to address the steering while it's out? (going with power) Suspension swap? Brakes ? (going to newer master cylinder and booster) Pedals? (going with modern firewall mount style)
Are those things I can get to fairly easy with the 460 in, or is it going to be one of those things where I find I have to pull the 460 to get to a steering box bolt or something? I've been looking at what I can reach now with the 272 in there, but the 460 is a much bigger engine and things are going to change.
Since your talking about going to power steering and newer/upgraded brake system I would do those at the same time.. Are you wanting to keep the original steering column/wheel? doing them all at the same time allows you to give room and make sure you have clearance needed. Also if you want to clean/repair firewall while you have stuff out of the way.
Moe is right. (The power of the Dark Side is strong with him) You should take care of the steering at the same time.
There have been plenty of engine swap/power steering clearance issues brought up on FTE over the years. Usually having to do with headers, exhaust manifolds, and pipes trying to occupy the same space as steering boxes, columns, and shafts.
Do everything you can while the engine compartment is empty, just be careful you don't fall into "mission creep."
Doesn't help that I'm doing major changes. Might have to get the axles and tires... and suspension done at the same time too. I'll have to see how the front axle I'm looking to get steers to make sure everything matches up.
The ole Y Block weighs in at 626 lbs while the 460 tips the scales at 720 plus. Adding power steering or A/C would add additional engine weight (transmissions may be pretty close depending on what you are using). Point being you want to have new or stronger than new springs to support the extra weight.
Y-Block
30" from bellhousing flange to snout of water pump
21" block from behind front cover to bellhousing flange
24" wide (offy valve covers)
24" tall, oil pan to top of valve covers
Y Block is 24" wide the 460 is 27" wide. On my 292 I can just barely get an oil filter on due to the Toyota power steering gear. Adding 3" you'll certainly have to off set the engine towards the passenger side.
Well, looks like I'll need to do it all at once then. I might loose fit the engine since I'm putting in a Zf5 with a transfer case and that might effect my firewall. No sense in painting the firewall if I have to cut something. Hopefully not.
Exhaust, steering, clutch, brakes, pedals, suspension, axles... tires (since they're big guys).... radiator, wiring, ebrake. Basically anything that makes it move in one way shape or form.
What I wouldn't do for a heated shop to work in, ha.
