You need an ODB2 gauge to read actual temps, the factory "gauges" are useless, the fuel gauge IS the exception.

The 11K was for a diesel in another current thread. Poor guy. My bad, it was 16K.

This linked thread turned out to be a thermostat issue.

From what you have tried, I would again try a new motorcraft thermostat and a motorcraft cap. Seems redundant, but those parts are more critical on these engines than you would think.

new motor is working great!

All,

I went ahead and bought a new motor for the Excursion from a dealership and had it installed a month ago... $4K for the motor and $2K to have it installed.
I've got 2300 miles on it so far and haven't had one issue.

I pulled 9000lbs up the grapevine this past weekend and the temp never changed...

I kept the RPMs below 4000 which translates to approx. 45 to 50 MPH climbing that big hill both ways.
Thanks for all the responses...

thanks for the story, I'm in the same boat and will replace engine by dealer soon. Any additional information that might be helpful for me? Thanks

I took a trip a few weeks ago and pulling trailer up a steep grade my gauges went from normal to pegged hot pulled over shut the truck off turned it back on and it went to normal started driving and it did it again so I bought a obd2 dongle that hooks up to my phone. I have replaced the thermostat, Radiator cap, water pump, radiator (old one was full of stuff) and now towing on flat ground I am running about 203-210 and on hills 210-215 according to the scanner but I get weird spikes up over 300 or sometimes even 400 is this exhaust gasses getting into the coolant or do I still have air from all the changes and are the temps ok?

Starting your own thread would be a start, also verifying your clutch fan is working properly and the temp sensor is working.

You may also need to flush the engine again, over 200 seems high, I'm running a Motorcraft thermostat and barely hit 200's.
