2015 SD elocker clicking,clanking

Hi everyone ,was screwing around in the snow playing with the electronic locker in my driveway on my f350 CCLB 6.2.Was just really checking out the traction. At times when the wheels broke loose i can hear a quite audible click, click, click as the wheels spin i cant hear to well but i had the window open and i can clearly hear it.Was not going crazy doing donuts or anything like that.Just letting them brake loose and spin a bit. When i shut the locker off it stops but not right away.Only have about 12k on the truck

I'd just have the dealer check it out if it's still under warranty.

My understanding is that they're pretty "idiot proof" in that they automatically disengage if you go too fast or turn too tight, so I don't think anything you do to it can hurt it.

Is it actually engaging?

might click once or twice.. a magnetic solenoid clicks in.. locking differential.

did you have the brakes on.. anti-lock brakes.

or the traction control working???????

did any dash lights flash...?? even for a second ???

have it inspected.

these Smart Trucks will mess with playing.

I haven't used mine yet (one year old Jan 11 and 11,000 miles). I've been wanting to exercise it but I don't want to get my truck dirty.

It is BEST to engage the e-locked while the vehicle is in motion, with your foot OFF the gas pedal! Your e-locker is a positive engagement device. If the teeth are not 100% aligned when you pull the button while stopped, it will not engage until they are 100% aligned. Now, if one wheel starts to spin....click, click, bang!!! Enough times and you will round off the teeth, and voila......it will no longer function properly. When one pulls the button while the vehicle is in motion with their foot off the gas, it allows the teeth to fully engage with no power being put to them. Now then, when one applies the power, both wheels are locked together, both recieving 100% of the power being applied. I hope I made this clear to you! If you must engage while stopped, very gently apply power, preferably in a direction that the rig will move without spinning a wheel, and allow the locker to fully lock up.

I let it engage.Went foward and back gently.Made sure the lock light was on.Thought maybe i messed up like you said but i tried it a buch of times.I took a break then i went to reinvestigate just got back.Noticed i had the steering turned a bit when it did it or i was loading one side of the truck sliding a bit in my snow covered dirt driveway.I went to a snow covered parking lot and did some slow turns with the lock on.I can feel the tires and axle winding up and then-something has to give and it did with some clanky noises, kinda cliky too.Sounds like it could have some kind of ratcheting detent going off?Maybe like a detroit locker i hope?Limited slip diff has the clutches so you dont feel anything on a grippy turn.Im going to refrain from doing this i dont want to grenade it.Use the lock in a strait line if needed.Have to find out what is in that pumpkin

the e-locker is an Open rear end.. till its turned ON.

no clutches.

so when making a turn.. one tire will be dragged.

I used mine several times .. loaded and towing on gravel .. tight turns.. never released.. just a tire dragging.

as far as I can tell .. it never released. and YES I had a car with a locker. and a different one with posi-traction.

Just like 99150 said. You do have to let it engage before you put power to it. And it is 100% locked when engaged, up to the "safety" speed it kicks out at!

I know there are no clutches in the rear .i was comparing it to a limited slip and how they work.I was not clear enough.Something has to give way if you drag a wheel when turning with a locker there should be something other than busting a axle .May be a safety device inside there

Thanks seville that was very interesting.I read the whole thread. There must be workings inside there people dont know about.Seems the mechanics are in the dark somewhat about it.The dealers should be sending techs to their ford school for new stuff that comes out.I am a fleet mechanic now but used to work for GM dealers and they sent us to their GM service training on all types of stuff-Strange

There's nothing magical or vodoo about it, just an e-locker, either locked or not. No torque sensing or anything like that just a solenoid it engage it, it's acting as a spool or open. The truck cuts the voltage to the locker at speed for safety but that's about it. If it's grinding or racheting that's not normal, it's not a Detroit locker. If it's under warranty and in question best to let the dealer fix it, that's what the warranty is for. As for tearing the guts out of one I haven't need to let alone I'm not positive if you can get individual parts.
