8BA engine clutch disc question
When I search this part number I can't seem to come up with exact part measurements maybe because my disc is pretty worn?
I measure 10" diameter 10 spline disc at 1 1/8" inside diameter of spline but get greater than 1 5/16' outside diameter of spline. Even then it refers to a PN
29A-7550-A??
Any suggestions?? how accurate do these measurements have to be given a 10" diameter disc..10 splines and correct inside spline dimension of 1 1/8?
Unfortunately the disc I have is a "re-manufactured Borg Warner disc without a part # which I can't locate. BTW. the shop manual refers to specific colored disc springs. Color of my springs long gone..
Edit: edited due to incorrect info. See Joezzzz's reply below
Read a reply and my experience is the autopart stores don't know what to provide.
1 1/8" spline was used in cars, 1 3/8" splines were used in trucks (like my F-1).
Do your self a big favor and contact the Early Ford Store of Calif. Early Ford Store of CA - Antique Ford Parts - Used Original, NOS & Reproduction parts-1928-1972 Southern California Vintage Ford Parts -Restoration or a Hot Rod, they have will have the correct rebuilt clutch and pressure plate for your vehicle.
They do have a core charge, but its worth the time to wait to get the right part.
As an example the autoparts store that I used had a clutch that looked liked it fit, except when you rotated the clutch on the pressure plate, (yes I did put in the right way) would hit the bolts that hold the flywheel to the crank. To make matters worse, the pressure plate fingers set lower by .200" and no matter what you do, you can't adjust that much.
Good luck
Another bulletproof source is Ft Wayne Clutch, V8 Archives - Fort Wayne Clutch & Driveline
They will also rebuild your existing disc and pressure plate.
Meant to address the spring color question, here's a list of all the different colors used in the 8BA era. Mind boggling! Note the number listed for F-1 10", not sure what that is.

Having added to my confusion..is there someplace I can send what I have to be rebuilt avoiding a further headache?

While I'm beating my head against the wall about determining the correct clutch disc for my 8BA engine..would you mind taking a closer look of the pictures (below) of my present disc. Does it even look worn and in need of replacement.
When I look at pics of similar new discs the new ones don't look (in terms of wear) any different than the one I have.
I just jumped to the conclusion that it needs replacement because each side of my disc shows every other pair of rivets near the top of the disc lining material. Again each side shows the same pattern of wear.
Hopefully I can put this matter to bed once and for all and continue on with my work.
Thanks
I'm not sure why you are anguished about this? You must have a Truck trans (a Car trans wouldn't fit), which will have the 1- 3/8" shaft, and you have confirmed it's a 10" clutch. You should be able to buy an off-the-shelf disc. Here's a quick way to verify what you have, buy this alignment tool at OReilly's for $5, and try it on your old disc:
Pioneer Inc. TAT5325 - Clutch Alignment Tool | O'Reilly Auto Parts
I guess the anguish stems from buying a part for $50+(and wasted time) only to find that it isn't the exact fit because I can't get the measurements to match anything I look at on line and there are many variations.
Humm..a truck trani in a car engine (8BA) maybe?
My disc measures 10" with 10 splines. Outside spline diameter is 1 5/16" and depth of spline is 1 1/4".
The inside spine to spline is 1 3/8" and 1 1/4" inside spine to spline.
Haven't found one disc that matches dimensions that I have so doing some homework to avoid do things over again.
Considering I grew up in a Manhattan apartment with a hammer, screwdriver and pliers in a kitchen drawer..no auto experience and working alone on the floor of my garage at 70 years old, I'd say I've come pretty far.
Can't wait to show you guys the finished product some day. Stay tuned.
