Could a 87F-150 300 straight 6 manual with granny first out pull a 1500 chevy 88 350 with automatic? Now i know the the 300 has alot of low in torqe. And i know i would need a new header kit. But if i worked on it some does anyone think i could out pull it?

I would think it would, depending on what and how you're pulling. If you're both pulling a car trailer up a hill @ 70 mph, I would think the HP of the v8 will outpull the bigsix, but from a standing stop, I think the 300 rules! Not to mention that the 4.9 will surely outlast the 350 bow-tie by at least twice as many miles

I beg to differ about the 350 out pulling the 300 at 70. I have 3.55 gears and i can out-tow a 351 bronco on the hills with that extra low end torque, but i had 235/75/15s at the time. The mazda tranny makes it hard but i only pull a snowmobile trailer and i can pull it better. unless that 350 has some go-fast goodies i'd be alil more towards the 300. Urs is 2wd ..lighter....if he has std. cab..long bed...and u dont....stuff like that can make the difference. good luck man.

Nope, fraid not. Yeah the 300 has good low end torque but the TBI 350's have 210hp/300ft/lbs of torque and the 300 has 150hp/260ft/lbs of torque.

The 3.08's do it in for you. If you had 4:10's you would have a better chance.

I believe that I have to agree with pastmaster. the 350 has good high rpm power. the six makes it at low rpm.

also there is no replacement for displacement

There are a lot of things to consider. I have never pulled anything heavier then a snowmobile trailer, but they are enclosed, and have A LOT of air resistance to them. His being an automatic and mine being a man. mine did pull it better and used a hell of a lot less gas. Broncos have what..a 32 gallion or so tank? I have dual tanks..16 and 18 and i only went through 1 of my tanks to his one tank. I got 15 miles per gallon when towing a snowmobile trailer with two sleds on it, a good 400 lbs of sand in the back, all our gear and two heads. That engine muscled that thing up some rediculous hills in rangeley maine when the bronco was hurtin'. Put it in 4th at about 2500rpm (about 55 mph) and i'll tow most anything you can gemme up a decent hill. I can put that tranny in 1st with 500 rpm up anything on the streets and it won't slow down, it will push that truck up some good sized hills. Maybe its just that i refuse to say a chevy will out tow any ford but who else on here wants to admit it either?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Dec-01 AT 04:35 PM (EST)]Both trucks long bed regular cab only diffrence is that the 300 is a manual(its got the really low granny first) and the 350 is automatic
Do you think the 300 with 3.08grears could out up a 350 that has 2.73 gears and that truck is an automatic also

I have owned various trucks ranging from a 300,302,351 and a 350
c*%vy. I hate to tell you guys that are 300 fans but there is no way a 300 will out tow a 350 or 351. Now dont get me wrong the 300 may out tow the 351 or 350 to about 20 MPH but after then it is all over. Now this is all based on the same gearing. A 350 with a power glide tranny and 3.08's will probably have as much towing power as a geo metro. But you put a good 3-4 speed auto with 3.73-4.11's behind a 350 or 351 your gonna outtow any 300 or any 302 with any gearing. (granted that all engines are stock or all are modified)

I do like the 300 when compared to the 302. My 302 outpulls the 300 I had, but it takes about twice as much gas (I have to keep the RPM's at about 3500 in the 302 where it was about 2300 in the 300). The 300 is a good engine for longevity, and gas mileage when towing. The 302 is probably a better motor to have if you are not towing much and do alot of freeway driving. The 302 I currenty have gets about 2 mpg better than the 300 I had. When it came to towing the 300 got about 3-4 mph better.

If I was going to tow something heavy across county I would definetly want a 351 or 350 rather than a 300 or 302.

Like you said, gears ..tires..tranny...is the name of the game...weight of the truck too. Id take my 300 with some mods on it over a 351 gas hong anyday. I raced my buddies 351 bronco and i can beat him up until like 40-45mph and he pulls away on me because i can get a better jump with the manual, but once i hit 4th its downhill.

Yeah but I bet if you put those same mods on the 351 you may win until about 20 mph then it would be done from there..... The 351's power increases GREATLY with just little mods!
