I am looking into getting a diesel. I'm new to the forum and would like to introduce myself and ask for advice and info.
I currently have a 1500 GMC Sierra. 2015 slt 5.3 4x4 and it'sAnd a nice truck, very nice. However it has its flaws I haven't had any of the major problems people report but it lags when shift in the first couple of gears other than that it's sound. I've sank money into it and it's lifted etc.
but
I love diesel I have never owned one my 1500 gasser was my first truck purchase new and I didn't do a lot of research I jumped the gun a bought it. I never test drive a ford however I drove a super duty once and it was awesome. I currently do not own any heavy equipment nor tow anything regularly. I just want the truck to have as a daily driver and a JIC if I need to tow. I have heard upkeep is expensive and so is oil changes which I think if you change the oil and all every 15,000 miles it equals out the same
price as a gasser every 5,000.
I know now I will be criticized and I expect that but I recently purchased land and I plan on building a house in the next 3 years or so. Currently in my situation I could afford to buy a diesel but if I did it would be my last purchase for a very long time. I want to know what everyone thinks of these new 2017 super dutys are they worth it? I watched videos and the interior looks way nicer than the duramax and I heard the power stroke 6.7 is a better engine correct me if im
wrong here.
Ive also looked into 2016s but like the 2017 better. Trim
options im looking at the lariat maybe the value package or ultimate that's another thing I want you guys to share with me, is the ultimate package worth the extra 4k or no?
Also so is it the same price if you order online through the dealer and have it shipped so you get exactly what you want? Is this a better option?
I appreciate ate all the advice and info and I am open to any and all questions thanks!
Welcome Chris. You're on a Ford forum so of course many will be biased. What's for sure is we all think Ford makes a better product or we wouldn't be here. I think all three make decent trucks these days but my scale tilts toward Ford for many reasons. As for options, only you can decide if they are worth it. I have the dough for a Platinum but don't like some of the forced options and restrictions it comes with. Therefor it's Lariat Ultimate for me. On dealer stock vs. special order, there are far too many individual options for me to ever take a stock truck. I'm very particular. You say this will be a LONG term purchase so I'd be very particular in your situation as well. Pricing will be the same either way, you'll just have to wait for your truck. That's a worth while wait IMO to get exactly what you want...
Having bought land and built a house two years ago, I'd say keep what you have till the house project is done. I think my tally came out to spending $60k liquid cash on things like clearing, upgrades and surprises. Adds up fast and would be good to not be strapped during the process. Not to mention if you have land you'll need a tractor and lots of little things

Agree with rustyshakelford.....I've built several houses myself (I did everything myself except the poured wall basement, drywall, and plumbing)...I can tell you from experience that everything costs a LOT more that you estimate/think.
Houses = good investments that appreciate in value
Trucks = investments that go south the minute you drive off the lot
My advice....build your house first, then see if you've got any cash left. You can live in a house....a truck, not so much!
The land is already cleared and ready to go so I lucked out on that. I can put off building a house for a few extra years to get the truck I'm just trying to decide if I do this is this truck worth investing time into. I want something that will leave me pleased and will last. I was pleased with my 1500 but it's still not a diesel and lacks the power and everything that comes with the f250.
I appreciate the advice vice that's been givin already and welcome more because this is a big decision and I need you fellow ford enthusiasts opinions and council
Chris, if you're thinking 250, I would strongly consider the 350 instead. It's almost the same truck but the 250 is derated on paper to fill a different market segment. And, if you get the HD 250 the price is almost identical to the SRW 350.
Bottom line is only you can decide if buying a new truck is the right call, too many variables for us to try and sift through. But we can help you decide on a new rig if that is the call you make. Im a dodge/cummins guy through and through. Have had 8 and not one ever gave me a problem. Never could get past the plastic interior of the Chevy/GMC, especialy the dash, so until they get a something going in the interior department, they're off my list. As for ford, my dad had a brand new 7.3 growing up and it was trash. Never wanted a ford until the 6.7 came out, but couldnt justify spending money on a terribly outdated body style. So here i sit a dodge guy at heart with a 17 KR F250 on order. I have worn all the dodge body styles and interiors out and these new super dutys are beatiful, so i took the plunge. I promise that after sitting in and driving all three, youll fall in love with the super duty without a doubt!

Reason: Super-truck
Also if you guys don't mind me asking. How much of a down payment would you recommend on this type of truck? My 1500 I put 9kcash down. I can do this again but I don't really wanna save up till I have 20k that'll take a long time. Trying to get one this year, would I need to put enough down just to cover the cost of the Diesel engine?
how reliable is the 6.7 power stroke and are there any extras I need to get such as a engine block heater?
how many miles do you guys go till an oil change
any tips on talking to the salesman? Would I get a good deal for brand switching?
I'm going to get bashed for this......read up on buying homes if you are not paying cash. If the truck will be your last purchase for a long time because you won't have the money to buy another, then the truck will probably screw your debt to income ratio needed to get a loan to build your home.
Don't be truck poor, which is to say not to buy a vehicle that is so expensive that you have to make sacrifices in other parts of your life.
Maybe that's not your situation, I just wanted to throw it out there like Rustyshakleford...because he gave some solid advice.
I don't want to sound insulting but this is a want vs need debate. Putting off a house for a truck you don't need is not a smart move at all. You have a truck that will do what you need and putting off for "investing" in a truck that burns oil makes no sense. The min you drive it off the lot your investment just lost money. Like others have said there are always surprises in building a house whether custom or a spec home. Last thing you want is to run out of money and have a half built home or debts that can't be paid and have your fancy truck repod. Build the house then see where you are at. The SD's are only going to improve from here so you have that to look forward to. It's your money so do what you want but if you want a real opinion go to a financial adviser we are here to help you pick the perfect truck they are there to make sure you can pay for the truck/house
