Check engine light

After I fill up or drive a while with a pretty full tank, my check engine light comes on. It appears that the fuel tank cap gasket is not sealing good. Can that damage the engine

Sounds like maybe a vent valve problem. I know if you fill the tank after the pump auto stops, liquid fuel will get into the vapor recovery line and trip the light. Have Auto-Zone scan it to see what actual code that you are getting.
