I have a radar detector plugged in to the power port on my '00 EB Expy, but the port is always powered (forcing me to turn the radar on and off every time I want to use it). I will (if I have to) rewire it to be tied to the ignition, but wondered if there's a setting somewhere (a la turning the key 10 times or something) that I can use instead.
Why not just leave it on. It pulls less than 500ma and it would take months of none use to discharge your battery and from an electronics standpoint it is better for the life of the unit to just leave it on. ???
I guess it depends on what radar detector you have but most higher end models come with both a cigarette lighter AND a hard-wire with inline fuse. If not bring your detector to Radio Shack and find a head plug that fits or you can butcher your oem cigarette head plug.
Just find the fuse for something which is ignition controlled like the power window fuse in the box and take it from there. It's such a low amperage draw that it's ok.
