Greetings. I'm new to this area of the board since I've not had issues with my 2015 Explorer prior to this. It is a 3.5 V6 . When it idles, it tends to lope above and below 500 rpm. I have not had access to this vehicle on a regular basis so I don't know how long it's been going on. I gave it a bottle of Chemtrol and its slated for another at next fill up. Have there been any additional issues which might cause this problems. Years ago I would suspect the IAC valve. I am so unfamiliar with this vehicle, I don't even know if this vehicle has one. Any ideas?? Thanks
No, IAC on the newer vehicles with drive by wire. the throttle body has a motor that controls the throttle opening which controls idle speed. sounds like you may have a small air leak after the MAF which is allowing an unmetered amount of air in.
Actually now that I think of it, I think there is a TSB or recall on the throttle bodies on the 3.5L.
I have a 2012 Explorer with the same engine. It's got 100K miles and just started a rough idle condition. You can feel a stumble every few seconds in park, and it does it when you put the car in gear. I don't know if this is the same type of issue you are dealing with.
I'm going to start with cleaning the MAF and the throttle body and go from there.
My periodic rough idle continued to worsen, until it got to the point where a miss show up under moderate to hard acceleration. I had to really get on the pedal to finally get it to give me an error code. Code said it was a misfire, so I changed spark plugs. It purred like a kitten for two weeks, before it started to occasionally idle slightly roughly. It hasn't worsened beyond that in the last 4 months.
