I see you don't have any replies yet, so I'll see if I can get things started.
Who is "they", was it Motorcraft or Ford parts line? It sounds like some after market part line, marketing term.
If your 96 4.0L has 4X4, auto tranny, tow & payload packages, it might have specified/come from the factory with a up sized radiator & water pump, along with for example, higher output alternator, tranny cooler, up sized shocks, ect, as part of those packages, so you'd want to replace those parts with like design, to maintain performance. Especially if you lug & tug in the mountains, or live where it's really hot, or make long hot high speed interstate runs when you stress your vehicle.
So, if you can provide more info & maybe the forum can help make more sense of the "Max Cooling" term.
Thanks for the responce. My ranger is a 2wd. The parts that are tagged for max cooling seem to be fans and fan clutches on the different aftermarket parts. My cooling fan is of the 12 bladed style which seems to be for a standard cooling system. I am checking on parts good and bad before I start the repair. Sometimes there are improvements that can be madeon a 20 yr old system.
