Dave, to answer your question in #10, yes they have drain holes stock. The fact that yours is not rusted out, even with the nest, it tells me yours must be open enough currently to drain water. I to use air to blow out the crap in cavities like that but wear eye protection. After you get it blown out you can double check your drain and then flush it with water, blow it dry and coat it as suggested.
