Question Keys

I posted this on the SD/HD forum but thought that I'd ask here also: Can spare ignition keys be made anywhere or is this a dealer only item?

My "new" 2000 SD did not come with the key/socket to lower the spare tire. Is there anywhere to get this part besides the dealer (they want $45)

I've had keys made for mine at the local hardware store. The key for the spare ? Isn't it just the end of the jack crank ? It should be, get one at a junkyard if you don't have one. Or tell the seller you got gooned and you want one, it's unsafe to not have a jack crank.

The ignition key is nothing special. You should be able to have it made anywhere.

Ken - There is a special "socket" that goes on the end of the jack handle to lower the spare tire... at least on my truck. Mine appears to be made by McGard, Inc. There must be more than one key available because it has a key code printed on the paper with it.

Yea maybe the pick-ups have a keyed lock for the spare, I however do not so I can only compare it to my "bus" (as someone in a different FTE forum called it trying to make fun of me. HAHA, little did he know that once I get my van lowered and tricked out it'll say S'Cool Bus right on it). My van just has a little flap above the bumper that slides out and the end of the jack crank goes it, no key, no special gadgets, nothin. I'm thinking E-350's don't have a high incidence of break ins. I mean unless you wanted some plumbing elbows or some circuit breakers.

I believe that it just an addon lock to the factory spare tire winch. It should be able to be knocked out and you can use the standard jack tool then. Otherwise you will likely have to cough up the dough for a new lock set unless you can find the key code.

If you have a PATS system you will have difficulty replacing your key except at the locksmith used by a dealer. A security key has a very large plastic head. This is what has the computer interface in it. The lock has a shield that the key seats into and the computer can then "read" the key to authorise the ECM to start and run.
