I've scoured the forum for ideas and info for my '58 build. I am looking for some advice/recommendation from anyone who has dropped an FE in thier truck.
I am going to do the Toyota power steering conversion and want to know what combination of crossmember/engine mount and headers will work. I was going to fabricate my own crossmember but at this point my time is more valuable than my money. With that said, I want to be economic as I eventually will drop the 292 back in. In the meantime I will use the 360/C6 setup I have.
I have benn wrenching on cars since I could hold a wrench and have had good luck with Summit as far as application fitting what they list. With the Toyota conversion that throws a variable in that a catalog cant answer. Here are the links to the parts I am considering. Any suggestions by those who have dropped a FE motor would be appreciated.
That cross member should work. My original 57 I had as a teenager had the cross member cut out of a Galaxy or something and was welded in. The truck had a 352 with a CruiseOmatic. The galaxy cross member looks just like that Summit piece. As far as headers....that's a crap shoot until you get the engine in and see what you have for room unless you run across pics. I started to do the Toyota p/s I ran into header issues with the 347 in my 57. I went a different direction and sold the p/s system and i'm going Jag front suspension.
I cut a crossmember from a 56 Ford car, bolted it to the 292 in my 60 using the 56 mounts and then fabricated square plates with holes to fit over the end of the c.member. Then used angle iron to bolt to top and bottom frame rails and welded them to the square plate and then welded plate to c.member.
I used a 352 from a 66 Galaxie, all the front pulleys and the rear crossmember. I had to move my stock radiator forward a bit to clear fan.
I reshaped the 60 front c.member to clear the bottom pulley and lower hose (I think hose would have cleared without this.) I have stock steering and 3-speed on the column and no problems there. I had to fabricate a bracket to mount the slave cylinder to the engine. and move the clutch spring hole a bit. I cant help you on the headers but probably a good idea due to the everpresent FE manifold leaks.
