Sorry to start a new thread on what probably has been beat to death, but doing a search turned up everything except what I am looking for.
Remembering the engines and fuel of old, when guys would let their trucks idle for hours at a time, I have heard a few times that it isn't good to let these new engines idle for very long??? I am thinking this is because of the EPA junk that's on most of them??? I am only talking about 20-30 mins at a time...when its in the teens to below zero.
I am fully deleted,so I would think that I am better off for this?
Does it harm the engine to let it idle more than say....10 minutes?

It would still be best if you can run it on a high idle >1000 RPM to keep the head temps up. Even in the big trucks of yesteryear it was better to throttle them up and keep them warm.
Thx. I ended up doing a Yahoo net search on the topic. Mostly found a 50/50 mix on the subject. What was consistant though, was the mention of a high idle. I have a Lariat...is there a setting I can use to increase the idle speed?

Do a search on this forum for the high idle mod. There should be plenty of info about it. I haven't done it, don't think I need it, so I can't help you with it. I live in Arizona so no need for cold weather operation!!😎😀😎😀
Wet stacking was a problem WAY before DPF/SCR's were put on diesels...
My truck when it's cold high idles on it's own. At zero or below out, the truck never seems to drop much below 1000 rpms. In the sub zero temps with a cold soak start, it's been in the 1200-1500 rpm range. (and it cycles, so if it idles down and then the engine cools down again, it will idle back up again) If you gotta let it idle often and for 30 minutes or more then the high idle mod is something I might look into.
FWIW, Until I noticed the truck taking care of itself, I was ready to do the high idle mod.
I have plugged it in when it hits single digits, what I am more likely to use it for is....not so much my comfort, but to clear the windshield and windows while its snowing and or freezing rain mix.
senix - My idling is all after I have driven somewhere and I am waiting for someone, like picking the kids up at school. I don't idle in the morning getting ready since the truck's new home is a heated garage. No snow, ice, or frost to deal with anymore. On our sub zero days, I start it in the garage, it idles normal, I pull it out of the garage and if I put it in park in the driveway, it will high idle then.
What is a good oil temp before heading out on the road? I'm trying to figure out how long to let it idle. Just came out of an 02 7.3, I could tell by the sound, the 17 has an oil temp gauge.
Thanks, was 14 this morning pulled out of the garage the oil temp was 55, I let it idle up to 70, and had to go. Neighbors sure do appreciate the 6.7 over the 7.3 on cold mornings.
Yeah, even when I ran gas rigs, I like to let the oil and tranny fluid get circulated, for a few minutes...then take it easy. I sure do like the onboard digital temp gauges
