False Back up Warning

Does anyone know why the far left sensor is giving me a false warning.
It seems to only happen when it is below 20°F. When it was around
28°F yesterday it did not do this.

Thank you

Could be greasy film on a sensor. That was my problem, and cleaning it off really good was the solution.

That doesn't explain the temperature relationship, but it's a starting point.

Mine has been screaming at me since I got up to Michigan last Friday. Started after I washed off the lousy road salt off Saturday. Figured it was caused by frozen water. It's been way below freezing since. Can't wait to get back to Florida after the family shindig tomorrow.

I think it has to do with ice buildup on the sensors. Every vehicle I've had with backup sensors would go wonky sometimes when below freezing. I just pay closer attention to my surroundings and turn it off when this happens.

That's pretty normal from my experience. It's not a constant problem, but these sensors don't do well in the cold. Especially in the eary morning. About once a week the truck will scream as if there was a gaggle of nuns behind me. I'm guessing they get iced up and thst triggers the sensors.

I just bought (Tuesday) a new 2016 F-150 Supercrew 3.5 Ecoboost 6.5 bed 4x4...I had the same issue this morning after the slush packed in the rear bumper (from yesterday) froze last night. I washed the truck today and it didnt help, polished the lenses of the sensors and that didn'd fix it. I put it in my garage to thaw out and the faulty sensor went away... until I drove around the block and it faulted again (its 10 degrees right now)

I'm heading to the dealership for my accessories on Tuesday, I will have the service guys fix it and tell me whats up...only have 150 miles on the darn thing.

Talk to you tuesday! Glad to see I'm not the only one with the issue!

these sensors are not reliable. Mine failed to work at all when approaching a tree, and it lost some bark. Next day it was fine. Moral is you can't rely on them.

Sure happy you guys are debugging these issues before I get one of my own.

I was just relating to my wife last night about the early stability control that we had on our 2008 Tacoma. We were driving through a section of road that has series of tight S turns in very short succession. You could drive it fairly quickly because of the steep banking. However, when I drove it too quickly, the stability control system would go nuts; sounding an audible alarm and pulsing the brakes like crazy. None of our newer trucks with stability control get confused going through this same stretch of road.

A bit off topic, I know. However, the point I'm trying to make is that some of these neat "features" take time to sort out all the issues. Sounds like the backup warning is one of those?

I don't consider this a new problem, as I've seen it on all my previous vehicles with backup sensors. And I also don't feel it's an issue with the physical hardware. I think it's an unfortunate side effect of the technology limitations.

If wondered if we'd see this issue crop up with all the new active cruise control systems. Will they slam on the brakes if the front senors get hit with a spash of freezing rain? Haven't heard of any problems yet...

My corner sensors started this today... we had heavy rain last night and then the freezing cold front behind it ... I was wondering if temperature had something to do with it also as my truck was just sitting outside in the weather during this yesterday and wasn't driven until today when it was in the 20s ... Mine is a 2016 F 150 S.CREW bought June 1st with 7700 miles on it as of today ... this is my second electrical grimlin, the first was the passenger window mysteriously quit working for while one day in September, hasn't happen since... ???

My keypad was malfunctioning for a few days about a week and a half ago. Works fine now. Don't have any idea what caused it.

Well, I took my '16 to the dealership for the backup sensor issue and they stated this, "could not verify complaint, Ran KOEO test, no faults found. Tested reverse system, pass. Test drove vehicle, found no issue."

Guess I'll have to drive it in WHILE it's screaming at me :-) Maybe I'll set the E-brake and leave it in reverse (with the doors open) in the Service Bay just to make a point lol...

I don't mean to come off like a pessimist, but you are wasting your time. This has been a normal characteristic of this kind of system for as long as they've been around. Nothing is broken, they just act up in cold weather.

If that's the case I'll build a protection plate to mitigate the issue with the two outside sensors. Maybe a rubber flap that blocks debris from building up in there...
