harmonic dampener

I have A 1996 e150 5.8 , The harmonic dampener is shot and need a new one . The problem is that this year has a misfire sensor ring attached to the dampener and no one including ford makes them any more . The question is can I not worry about the misfire ring and install a dampener that does not have one .

thanks

I don't know what a misfire ring is, but I just replaced mine on my 1996 E350 5.8, and I just asked for the dampener at NAPA, and installed what they gave me. It looks the same, and the van isn't running any difference.

did the dampener have a ring that looks like a four point star on it?

No, nothing like that. Mine is the 350, not the 150, but it's the same engine. I would think the engine stuff should be the same.

This might be what you are looking for but I would call them first
DamperDudes.net (Americas Largest supplier of harmonic balancers)

perhaps part #F6TE-JA for the ring?
Do you think that "4 prong reluctor ring"/"star wheel"/"tone ring"/"4 point you are referring to is the pulse ring for the misfire sensor", could be pressed on to the damper? (all those different names I came across when reading different articles..)

Some threads that mention your part

This might be the whole part number
F6TZ-6312-JA

https://www.easyparts.com/Parts/Engi...ord/F6TZ6312JA

here is another thread that mentions your part
"you can find the balancer I posted pics of, you can just press the 4 tooth wheel off and press a 36-1 wheel on.(In the right location, of coarse.) That will give you a 28oz balancer set up for a 351 or a 347 stroker for DIS. The part number is F6TZ-6312-JA. "
28 Oz Balancer for 5.0L Stroker kit | Ford Explorer and Ford Ranger Forums - Serious Explorations

This probably will not fit but I would check with Number Dummy and see if it will cross over

I wonder if one of them, yours and his might be one that was produced at the end of the year and called a different year.. I think my 88 was actually built at the end of 87.. or maybe one is a CA emissions van or something like that?
I read a post that said 1996 OBD-ll F150's with 5.8 use this misfire sensor. Does yours have OBD-ll Wirelessengineer?

AH editing as I find info....
another post says: All '96 F150s under 8500 pounds were OBDII. F250s and 350s aren't. IS your E350 over 8500lbs?

Ok, It is a misfire sensor, not a crank sensor, and ties in with the emissions not the ignition system. the pics are from a 1996 F150 with a 5.0. The truck is a 96 built in 08/95 and has a distributor and MAF. with a relocated TFI.

On this pic you can see the actual sensor location on top of the damper. It is covered with a metal shield.

Here is a thread asking if it can be eliminated. If eliminated, will lit pass emissions, I don't know.

No damper but here is the misfire sensor itself

Bingo. That's it. Mine is the E350. It's got an OBDII port that has power to it, but it doesn't do anything. Out near the battery there is a proprietary Ford diagnostic port that actually works if you have the Ford machine that reads it.

Very confusing, as I usually take my van to a local shop for work, and they were trying to get info from the OBDII port one time, and of course it wasn't working no matter what they did.

I have 1997 Ford F250 4.9L 300-6 cylinders. It has a misfire ring called crankshaft position reluctor wheel with 3 points. Please, I need the product part number for it. I have harmonic balancer puller and I forgot to use it. I was using the 2 jaws puller and it broke my crankshaft ring that fits to the 594-391 harmonic balancer Dorman to my 4.9L engine. The ring simply install with 3 bolts to the back of harmonic balancer damper. It use special torx bits with hollow from AdvanceAuto.

This is just to get an idea of if your part looks like this or not. The fitment on this part says only for a 1996 4.9.
