Okay so, I pretty much just am wanting to soup up my 351m a little, just a little more extra power. I'm wanting to supercharge it, but I really don't even know where to start or what type of supercharger to get. I'm new to this whole world so I really don't know a whole lot about it. I'm thinking of looking in junk yards and such for a remote mount m90, which according to another forum I read says the m90 won't really add much power, so I if I do go the m90 route I'll more than likely port it. I'm going to run it with an inter cooler. So any info or tips or options for other routes with this engine would be very appreciated.
Rather than sinking money into a supercharger, I think the best way to wake up a 351M would be to get a 400 crank and pistons from Tim Meyer. For your buck, that will get you the most bang, along with a mild cam and a 4-barrel intake and carburetor. You really need to worry about its poor compression ratio first and foremost if you're looking to get power out of an M-block.
I've actually been thinking about getting a 400 crank for it, because from my understandings, the 351m's cranks are junk. Can you maybe post a link to a place to get a crank and cam. I'm really new to all this so bear with me haha
Tim should have everything you need. I'd highly suggest giving him a call; he's the foremost expert on Cleveland series engines. He'll help you pick out components to build an engine for whatever purpose you have in mind.
Everything thedopefishlives said is very accurate. However, you are being fed false info from somewhere else as there's nothing wrong with a 351M's crank. So, ditch your other source and rely on the folks here at FTE.
The problems with a stock 351M and a 400 are low compression and retarded cam timing. So the best thing you can do without rebuilding one is to replace the timing set with an aftermarket one, which helps the cam timing. A friend of mine did that to his stock 400 and he said the change was significant. Then he added a 4bbl carb and said the combo doubled the power.
The only thing wrong with the crank is the throw length. i.e. less cubic inches. Going to a 400ci build would be the best place to start if your willing to tear it down and rebuild. You could add a little compression, cam and zero timing chain and make a world of difference.
There aren't any bolt on supercharger kits I'm aware of. The only worthwhile setup I believe would be for 351c driven unit from Wiend etc and adapt it. Expensive!
