Hi All,
I'm looking at picking up a set of OEM alcoas that are in decent shape. He is asking $400 but i think $300-$350 is doable. i'd like to get them polished up to get the pitting and weight marks out of them Shop wants $90 a rim to strip the CC and buff/polish.
That leaves me with having to reapply clear coat. Has anyone ever reapplied CC to the rims? Looking around, POR15 makes a Glisten PC clear coat that "seems" like the right thing to use. I can brush on the first coat and then i'd have to spray the remaining ones.
Thoughts on any or all of this? Don't want to get in over my head by trying to have too nice of a rim.
I am wondering the same Bryan about whether it's worth it to do it or not. It might like polishing a turd LOL! I'll have to see what shape they're in when they get here in a few days before I make the decision of how far to go in cleaning them up.
yeah it seems like the Glisten PC would do a good job, just hate spending the $700 to get the rims in good condition!! They don't even come with tires but that could be a blessing in disguise.
Seriously, I don't think it's worth it. I think too much stock is put into having these Alcoas because they are "factory". You can get really nice aftermarkets from Discount Tire for $99 per rim. I would have gone this route had these other Alcoas not become available. $700 plus the $300 purchase price just to have Alcoas is a giant waste of money IMO. Not trying to shoot it down. I just think that money would be better spent on other mods.
It will be $90 a wheel to clean but it will be a raw material polish........to re-clear or not is the question there. If i get them for $350, then i'm $710 all in. Still a pretty penny
Thanks Red, that's a good thread. It seems to say that a clear cost stripped, oem forged aluminum rim should only need polishing once a year? That's not bad assuming it's correct!
Does anyone have experience with a set of rims without clear coat weathering a full year without much problem?
Turns out these rims are not oem alcoas. For a few years alcoa made a style for Micky Thompson, same forged aluminum material but some slight differences in design. Should have known it when the notches were not in the inner opening. Going to polish them myself as it's not worth investing an additional $90 a rim. Got some stuff from flitz so we will see what we can do.
