Natural Finish Ford 1 One Wire 100 Amp Alternator Tuff Stuff 7068 | eBay

Maybe I should get rid of this 100 amp alternator, I see powermaster does sell 60 amp but they are pricey at $160. It's amazing lot's of these one wires are 120 and go to 240 amps. Or can I feel safe with the 100 amp alternator?
Howdy,

If you already have it, don't "Get rid of it" It'll be fine. You may not ever use the capability but you'll also probably never wear it out either!

I bought my 100A Alternator from Autozone for about $$75-100 if I remember correctly. It was originally for an 80's Buick or Olds (etc), "Single Wire" and has a "Lifetime" guarantee!

Even if it does fail, I'll never have to buy another!!

If you haven't bought that alt from EBAY yet, don't buy it and get one from your local Autozone, O'Reillys, National, Advanced, or NAPA etc......... since you'll get it locally, it'll be approx the same price and it'll come with a "forever" warranty that will be covered locally!!

Cheers,

Rick

I really don't have any loads to speak of except the halogen headlights, and the starter inrush and charging the battery. Yes, I agree that a 100 amp alternator in a world of 60-200 amp alternators is more than what I needed. At the time I bought it it seemed to make sense (ever been there?). The alternator mfg states use 8GA wire. I believe the alternator will only add the amperage for the load, and the rest is not used. So if my load is only 30 amps, that's all the alternator will supply. So the 8 gauge wire I have is no good as well as the alternator should be thrown away. Where do you get your wire if this is no good? Thanks for your input, Kurt

I have used the Home Depot/Lowes THHN type wire, it's stiffer and difficult to work with but as long as you make terminations properly, it will be fine. NAPA sells "proper" wire if you want to change it.

As said, keep the alternator, nothing wrong with it.

Yes, you can keep the alternator if you like. You can also use the stiff wire but I would advise against it.
My recommendation would be: 8 gauge Primary Automotive Wire Red 10ft. Increments - Wiring Products

Also, any electric shop or electrical distributor will carry it. In a pinch you could cut up and use an AWG 8 battery jumper cable set.
The starter inrush is a moot point since the engine isn't running yet.

Thanks, I am going to get rid of the stiff wire, and did order some 8ga primary wire on the internet yesterday.
