Tire Size Question

Hello-

Just joined 12/20.

I have a question about tire size. I've got a 4 inch lift on my '88 F-150 4X4 with 33 inch tires. I want to go to 35 inch tires, but I'm getting some conflicting information. Some sources are telling me I can do it, no problem. Some are saying I'm going to need fender cut-outs, and some are trying to sell me a 6 inch lift kit.

Can someone help me out?

Thanks,

Casey

Tire Size Question

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Dec-01 AT 02:33 AM (EST)]The maximum tire size with a 4-inch lift is a 35x12.50/15
But this tire should be on a 15x8 rim, if it’s on a 15x10 it might rub.
You should be fine with 35's on 15x8
I also want to ask if you are going to be changing the gear ratio for the 35's

Tire Size Question

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Dec-01 AT 12:15 PM (EST)]Am I going to need to change my gear ratio?

I hadn't really thought about. Will my 4.9 I-6 have trouble turning those 35 inchers?

Also: Where might it rub? Are we talking outer fenders/body? Or contact somewhere on the inside? When I first got the truck, the 31's it had on rubbed the (stock) radius arms at full crank.

Tire Size Question

You don’t have too change the ratio, but you will notice it may seem slower, and your gas mileage will go down a little.
What is the current ratio in your truck? There is a code by the driver’s side door for the axel. Tell me what the code is I’ll tell you what your ratio is.
It is really up to you if want to change the ratio.

The 35's will rub on the radius arm when cranked full lock, but should not hit the body or fender, but might if your 4 wheeling.
You may have to shim the bumper a little so the tire doesn’t rub, but only if you get tires with big lugs.

If you are worried about contact you should in stall a 2-inch body lift, they are fairly cheap and easy to install, with minimal side effects. That would get you the 6 inches of lift.

Tire Size Question

That sounds like the best way to go. I'll just stick with my 33's until I can get a body lift in there.

Thanks for your help.

Tire Size Question

I Think It will work just fine! I have a 1993 f150 supercab 4x4 and am running 35"bfg mud terrains on the stock rims, the only time its ever rubbed is when I had to do so interesting off roading to free my buddys stuck toyota! When it did rub it was only against the bumper (I removed the plastic wind deflector before this happened)
It also rubbs the radius arms alot so just dont turn as sharp and you'll be fine! My truck has only a 3" body lift so that is why I say that you should have no problems at all! I did replace my tired 302 with a 1996 302 and have had my mazda built tranny rebuilt for the 3rd time about 6mo ago but stupid me I still havent changed my gears from the 3.55s I do plan on putting in 4.56 gears in the very near future if I dont break anything else first! In overdrive on the highway I am turning approx 2000 rpm at around 65-70mph (I'm canadian so i'm not sure of the exact conversion rate!) you should be a little better off with the 6 banger because of the superior low end tourque so try it out you never know you just might like the results. Good Luck
