I am getting ready to replace the hub assemblies and U-Joints on the front of my 2003 F350 4x4 5.4L auto. I have the hubs and U-joints already. Is this the seal kit I will need for the job? or is there more to it that I'm not seeing? Oh I have Manual Warn hubs, the auto hubs were removed by the PO. I also have vacuum lines hanging not plugged, but it hasn't affected the the operation of the heater or AC unit. I haven't tried the 4x4 button yet either becuase the right front U-Joint is toast.
Looks like you have the axle dust seal, the large knuckle seal and the hub o-ring. That is it from what I remember. You will need the tool to install the large inner seal. I made one out of plumbing pipe and flange. I do not have a pic, but there are pics on FTE forum. Just have to search or maybe someone has a pic handy.
You should plug off the vacuum lines at the solenoid pump. It is on the passenger firewall under the hood. Just to prevent any issues.
Thanks, yes I was either going to use PVC, or Black iron pipe for the install tool. Ok, I'll look for the pump and plug it, wasn't sure it was even working, because the vacuum line didn't have any suction on it. Now all I have to do is wait for a halfway decent day seeing how it'll be done on the driveway...BBRRRRR!!!!!
You don't need a new vacuum seal or yellow o-ring then. As long as the old ones are not completely trashed you can re-use them. I don't see any point in replacing them since you have manual hubs.
I was told that the seals get destroyed when you try to remove the axles to change the ujoints. I was also told that the seals also keep debris from getting into the hub bearings and if i don't replace them that the bearings will be trashed in a couple of months.
I have had success with pulling out the axle shafts with the seals attached. I use a large prybar and get behind the knuckle and pry out. You have to take your time. Some grease spread around in there will help it along as well.
