Hi all. This is probably not too difficult a problem, but...
I have a '54 with 223 engine and 1-barrel Holley carb. Runs good but after I drive for a while, typically from 10-20 minutes, the carb starts to flood like crazy. Actually overflows onto the exhaust manifold below.
I thought maybe the float sticks so I took it out and put it back, etc. The carb has a clear bowl where you can see the float. When the problem occurs, the bowl is FULL but the float can still move around.
Any thoughts? Should I just rebuild the carb or could it be something really easy that I could fix now?
There is a metering pin under the rear tang on the float, if the float level is properly set, the rear tang forces the metering pin to seat, and shut of fuel flow to the carb.
Sounds to me like the float level is way off, float tang is set to high, causing the metering pin to not seat, and shut down the fuel flow.
There should be a sort'a spring wire, which attaches the metering pin to the rear tang on the float, that could also be bent out of shape.
There also may be some sort of debris, in the metering pin hole, that is not allowing the tip of the metering pin to seat.
Sounds like you got a pinhole in the float. If the bowl is full and the float can still move around then it ain't floatin' anymore. Does that make any sense? If so, it's the first thing for me that did today.
I had the same problem with my 58 223. I adjusted the float so many times i could do it upside down blindfolded. Finally I said let's just see..... i took the float pushed it up to the top of the bowl and when I went to put the cover back on I held the float up some and tightened up the bowl screws. It seems that the lip of the float was catching on the seal and sometimes it would flood like crazy and aothers it wouldn't fill. Try it it might help you also.,
My carb does the same thing, i am still fine tuning the float setting. It seems the setting is a real particular thing. I have another carb with a glass bowl and i think i will install that next time as as then i can see the level.
Make sure the float floats.....the brass one i had wouldn't so i have a "plastic"? one now.
