9" Hunting

I am going tomorrow to pick up a 9" posi for my Ranchero. I have 350 gears in it now and it is a 9". What exactly do I need ? Just the center section ? I think I want to stay with the 350 gear so the gears are not important. Can I use any 9" truck or car center section with the trac lock ? What codes are on a locking axle and I know I have 28 spline axles in it now. Can someone point me in the right direction Thanks Bill

9" Hunting

Hi Bill,

Here's my .02$ Truck 9" diff's all came with 31 spline axles as did the truck 8.8. Some cars were available with the 9" 31 spline diff, identifiable by the N on the case (BIG Bucks!). If you know that you have 28 spline axles then search for a T4 traction-Lok 9" center section with 28 splines and the 3.50:1 ratio. The T4 has two sets of spider gears (4 total) in the carrier.

If you do purchase a truck diff (center section), you will then have to hunt for 31 spline axles for your car, big bucks, try Ford or custom made. The metal tag on the rear (if it has one) should read 3 L 50. Beware that Ford also produced a T2 traction-Lok diff that is identifiable by the presence of 2 spider gears I would avoid that diff. since it is much weaker than the T4. I have seen the T2 blow up behind a 351w 4 speed Fairlane.

I have done my share of drag racing with the 9"/ 28 spline rear and never broke anything back there. Try Perogie enterprises, George or Randy will have what you're looking for.

PS. setup your gallery, I would like to see your cars. I had a Q-code '73 Mustang Sports roof. It ran low 13s @ 107mph. I miss that car!
