I thought GPS units were not even available. Does your smartphone not have a good GPS? My iPhun is all I have ever needed these last 2-3 years.

Fine if you can see it going down the road... The Garmin I have is a 7" screen and very easy to read without taking my eyes off the road for long..

I have an iPhone 7 with a big enough screen. But the GPS units are nice. Expensive too.

Better than driving under a too low bridge!

Just a matter of personal preference.

There have been places that we go to camp where there is no cell/data service and the maps don't work. GPS unit always works.

Just a thought on the height clearances - I am not sure what the threshold is on what the Garmin units route you through, however there may be a difference in the actual height between the pavement and obstruction over top and what it is marked as. Case in point is a repaving job over top the old roadway that takes a couple inches of height out. If the original clearance is 12'6" you may end up with 12'4" actual.

Exactly! My unit is 13'4" but I do put in 13'6".

I do the same with my Garmin RV760. Mine is 13'2" and input 13'4". Also double check the route with the Rand McNally road maps. and number one rule is to stay out of New York city. (worst postings).

Esp I-95 through the city on east side of the bridge. LOTS of low overpasses!!! LOTS! I braved it unaware of them until my 760 started barking at me.... I had an 18 wheeler ahead of me...if he was going to make it, so was I. I did hear my radio antenna (on the RV) click, click, click going under two of them! I will not go that route again to New England!

That happens where you describe in NYC if you're in the right lane on i95. The old arched bridges are 13'6 in the center but only 12'9" in the slow lane. On a trip to FL last year, I spotted the 12'9" sign just as I went under it! Must have missed my AC's by millimeters.

Can't really remember if I was in center or LEFT lane but after I cleared the FIRST one, I just stayed right behind that 18 wheeler!!!
I think I have 13'6" logged into the Garmin and it was continually warning me! I had no place else to go 'cept straight ahead! Next time I go that way it'll be I-287 to I-87.

There are lots of good reasons to avoid NYC and the GWB!
