I have a 1986 E350 with the 460. I want to take off all the belts that I can. Ac? Smog? I don't ever use ac and I don't want the engine turning it or anything it doesn't need to.
Im new to these vans and I can't seem to even get out of it. My wife complains because I'm always tinkering with the van and now I'm getting into the motor.
Im not really looking to gain anything I just want the motor to run nice and smooth. I don't want anything slowing it don't or stressing it out. I want to have the bare minimum under the hood.
For a system that old I'd recommend all the engine vacuum lines be replaced. A full ignition tune up and filters. You've probably got something of the order of 400 ft/lbs of torque available, I wouldn't worry about free-wheeling accessories. Almost forgot, if yours uses a thermal clutch on the radiator fan, replace it. Enjoy your Ford, Henry insist you do.
I agree with every reply above. You can't gain any power and the minimal parasitic loads you speak of are absurdly tiny compared to your engine. It's about as helpful as changing your brake fluid to DOT5.
With that said I do "feel ya" with regards to simplifying the engine compartment. However I still think your idea would be utterly wasteful of your time/efforts.
My V10 van has about the same hp and torque as your 460 V8. I cannot remotely feel when the A/C compressor kicks on. Sure as heck won't make a difference to disable smaller accessories.
Everybodys different though: keep us posted about what you do.
you are in oregon and they have some substantial enviro laws I think and the removal of the smog pump belt will get ya. Best thing would be to convert if $$ are available to fuel injection and there are kits available, but they cannot be used on kalif reg vehicles. 1st thing to do is find out what you can remove to not risking enviro regs in your state.
Not really..you slap a Edlebrock Performer Intake and a Good Holley square bore with dual exhausts and resonators or Dual 300 cubic inch Mufflers and you're done ...the second engine in my 77 dually was a 76 from a Club Chateau 350 semi float 3:73...It threw a rod towing a loaded trailer to the dump...the tow charge was over 500 cash....
I now have a 89K engine that has been maintained from new...Read my sig....True roller timing chain is your friend..
The main thing about the 460 that most people don't understand is that it is a square engine.....Like the Chevy smallblock..( I know profanity ) ...but it is what it is...the firing order is IDENTICAL except for Nomenclature differnence....( Ford is Left to right in the Plan View as Chevy is right to left sitting in the seat) or something like that....but he engines (Ford 5 and 7.5 ltre and the Chevy Smalblock are almost identical engine configurations)
The only thing bolted on the front of these engines that consumes any HP worth talking about is the mechanical fan, and the clutch in these things are a common failure point. If you want to spend some money and make a difference you will actually feel in the drivers seat swap it for electric fans with a nice electronic control system.
I live in Oregon too and you don't have a thing to worry about, DEQ just wants your money, on the same note i don't like vehicles that add excessive pollutants to the air i breathe so i do my part to make sure my vehicle is being good to mother nature..
Any parasitic load that can be reduced or eliminated is a boost for mileage, hp and torque but the gains will be negligible and you won't be able to tell a difference..
I had a custom Y-pipe built and use a Walker Super Converter with no air-pipe, pass DEQ with flying colors..
Muffler of choice is Walker Dynomax..
Think of an internal combustion engine as a giant air pump, the easier it sucks air in and blows it out the more efficient it becomes so focus on rebuilding the entire exhaust, get rid of the stock cats (they suck), get rid of the stock muffler (it sucks too and weighs a ton), aside from that you really won't need to change anything else, the exhaust mods alone will help to free up some power and while your mileage may not increase the power and torque certainly will and you have made tyhe engine more efficient
Ok that was the wrong video...but the point I was trying to make is that the 460 is easy to modify to what you want depending on how much money you want to spend on it ....
i watched the video and I don't understand the connection to this thread.
Same here. The video's host seems to enjoy spending his producer's money to a level that indicates a disconnect with reality. I'm not attacking Blageurt but, "Not really..you slap a Edlebrock Performer Intake and a Good Holley square bore with dual exhausts and resonators or Dual 300 cubic inch Mufflers and you're done ...the second engine in my 77 dually was a 76 from a Club Chateau 350 semi float 3:73...It threw a rod towing a loaded trailer to the dump...the tow charge was over 500 cash....
I now have a 89K engine that has been maintained from new...Read my sig....True roller timing chain is your friend.." seems a tad scattered, but he seems to enjoy his van.
