Good pictorial, Scott! Whenever I do something I forget to take pics till I'm finished. I never remember to take step by step pictures. The odometer is set up like the 53-55 speedo units but of course the speedo face and needle is different, but the working parts of the speedo look the same.

It is a bear to get those separators lined up properly and put in the right spots so I can see why you didn't take pics at that stage. Well done.

Ross, this isn't the one from my truck. It's a spare I had that is/was in really rough shape. The numbers look like cracked old paint and are just flaking off.

Abe, you're right. It was kind of a Rubic's Cube thing figuring out how to get it back to zero. Especially since it was gummed up and I didn't want to break anything.

So for anybody that decides to reset the odometer, each number rolls independent of the piece between them. Mine were stuck but worked free. The "separators" all have slots and have to line up when you're back to zero. They lock on to the speedo so they don't rotate with the number wheels. Not too hard to figure out once you're in there.

Are the numbers on a decal, or painted / printed on the wheels? I wonder if someone sells the wheels to rebuilders?

Abe, Be careful with the WD40. Please don't flood anything with it and leave it on, especially something as delicate as a speedometer. I used to do a lot of gun repair and one of the biggest causes I saw for the need of repair was the gunowner flooding the gun inside and out with WD40. It will dry in time and gum up everything. Solvents don't cut it very well after it has dried either, it is very hard to remove. I cringe whenever I hear of someone spraying a tool, instrument or gun with WD40. Use it very sparingly.

I used it when I fixed the speedo on my 54 about 17 years ago to loosen things up. But then I lubed it with 3 in 1 oil. And it is still working fine today. But I understand what your saying.

Ross, it looks like the numbers might be a decal on the wheels. I wonder if new decals can be made at a print shop? It would probably have to be sheets of them made and cut out as needed to be economical.

I don't know what the restoration people use and they probably aren't going to tell. They do great work but, you have a long time to wait and a high price to pay.

I caved and bought an NOS unit. Hopefully its not falling apart when I get it.

I cleaned my original up last year and it was working but, recently the odometer quit. There are a couple people out there that refurbish to like new condition but, the price is about the same if not more than NOS. Plus there is a very long wait.

DC usually sells good stuff and I see some out there are "Officially Licensed by Ford" reproductions. Anybody running any of these?

How do they compare to NOS? Are they copies or maybe some improved technology, or better materials inside?
Looks like HILLBILLY BOB has one for the right price:
