HELP!! I am considering changing the rear end in my 2000 E150 conversion van. I tow a pretty good sizes travel trailer and think different gears would help. I have a 5.4L, Auto, 3:55 L/S now. Thinking that 3:73's would help. Any thoughts, suggestions? Also, where to find new gears and what info do I need to have ready if I find a place to buy them.
Do you tow often? 3.73's would definately help but 4.10's might even be better if you tow lots and if your trailer is heavy.
You should be able to get gears through your dealer or anyone that specializes in drivetrain type work, quite often 4x4 shops do lots of that.
To get the right gears you will probably just need the tag numbers off your diff. the tag is bolted to one of the bolts that holds the back cover on. It should be just an 8.8" rear diff which is very common. Gears from a F150 will fit.
Thanks for the info. I tow several times a year-vacations and weekend get aways. The trailer weighs about 6500#. The van is also used as a daily driver so MPG is a concern. I considered 4.10's but thought 3.73's might be a good compromise.
