I'm in the process of planning a head unit swap in my 2001 X and need to find a good (the best?) integration module for our steering wheel controls. I think there are basically two to choose from, one by PIE and another by iDatalink.
Whatever you get, make sure it's compatible with both the HU, and vehicle. Pioneer is so popular you shouldn't have a problem.
I installed a PAC interface to control my Clarion HU. I like that fact you can program tap, and long press commands for each steering wheel button(ie: short press "mode"=change input source/ long press "mode"= power on/off. That effectively doubles the amount of available commands you can potentially initiate with your existing wheel buttons.
I am subscribing to this thread as I just picked up a Navigator steering wheel to swap into my Ex and want to use the steering wheel controls with my Pioneer stereo.
I was doing some reading on the steering wheel adapters. I have not decided on any one but I did like the one from Axxess.

That seems like a cool feature, its going to be nice to hear from those that have installed any of these products.

I just installed the Axxess-ASWC-1 in my EX to use with my Pioneer AVH-X4800BS. It works well. It auto detects your unit for you so you do not have to program it.
Three wires total to hook up! You have to hook up 12v, Ground, & Connect the Gray/Red wire of the ASWC-1 to pin 14 of the vehicle's 5700 Harness (steering control harness).
The unit I just installed didn't even need the adapter. The radio had the ability to program the buttons.
Head unit went in today. Didn't connect cameras yet though. Ended up not using any mounts at all due to the tight fit. No face plate either. The steering wheel control adapter also wasn't needed with this radio. The button pushes are programmable in the head unit itself. It looks like it was made for it.

That looks great! Nice feature that the adapter isn't necessary.
Hope you have better luck than I. Axxxess should be the easiest. Didn't work for me. Tried a PAC-that didn't work. Wore out tec support on both and never got anything resolved. I put in a new Kenwood DDX 9702S. I finally ordered a remote control for older Kenwood units. I get most functions that way--well all the ones I would get on the steering wheel. It might be the Kenwood unit. This is the 2nd X Ive tried this in and couldn't get the controls to work in either one. The Axxess would go through and say it had program and best I ever got was "volume up". PAC wasn't even close. Of the 2, the Axxess was the easiest--in theory

Did you use a 12v mid-wire tap to get the feed from pin 14?
Are you able to control phone call volume from the steering wheel?

How much did you trim the upper/lower lips of the opening? I was trying to mock things up today and was tentatively planning to trim the lower down on the left and right to make it level with the mid-edge/lip, then trimming upper as needed to clear the chassis.
That seemed to be a decent way to center the head unit in the opening vertically...
I also picked up a wiring harness but only ended up using one wire because I don't like cutting my OEM wiring harness'. Its the PAC 98-04 Adapter Cable 20-Pin for Ford.
I did have issues with the setup as the documentation is a bit lacking and my PAC device would not work with my Iphone or Ipad so I spent a bunch of time trying different wires and setup to get it configured. I tried to update the firmware and couldn't get that done either.
I ended up getting the auto-configuration to work with my PC and going through the setup had better instructions for connecting up the wires. I had already figured out how to manually set it up so I ended up setting up with the manual method.
So far I do like having the steering wheel controls for my radio and I especially like the fact I can setup the 4 buttons to do two tasks each so its like having 8 buttons.
