Do you care what gears you have or are you swapping in whatever you want?
Based on how old these trucks are at this point, I'd go with a rust-free Ex with 3.73s before holding out for 4.30s. IIRC, most Exs were built with 3.73s and the 4.30s were an option.
Until you have a specific vehicle to diagnose I wouldn't get set on any mods as a worn out EX can easily consume your entire budget just bringing it back to a roadworthy condition.
Yeah, I'm really leaning toward looking for a southern truck. I owned a 2000 Ex for about a year a while back, and it was a Michigan rust bucket underneath. Made everything a huge pain in the *** - frozen rear calipers, the ball was rusted into the receiver in the hitch, etc etc. Do not want to deal with that crap again.
I'm the type that would rather drive an older vehicle that is paid off and built/modded the way I want rather than have a payment. That is kind of my goal with this next truck - plus I'm almost in a position where it will not be my only vehicle, so taking it apart to try X or Y is heck of a lot less stressful than if it is your only ride!
My current Ex came from North Carolina and southern trucks are the way to go! It's been in Michigan for 7 years now and is holding up well but I'm starting to see a little rust here and there. I'm in the process of undercoating it with Eastwood's Rubberized Undercoat with Rust Encapsolator, hoping it'll stop little has started. Also, the factory lighted running boards to a decent job of keeping the salt off the door seams.

Huh, never thought about it that way - I had those running boards on my 2000 and they were rusted from front to back and side to side. Makes sense if the running boards were blocking the crap from the body

I forgot to mention that there is very little seam sealer in the doors, so water flows through the door and into the seam, then it will rust it. I sealed mine recently, again trying to stop or at least slow down the rust. My inside of the doors looks great but my pass front seam is starting to rust. Hopefully I can slow it down until spring then I'll blast the seam clean and start over.
Once you get to about 25 posts then, you can have your PMs enabled. Maybe make a few comments in the "What did you do to your EX today" thread or the CL finds thread. .
Apoc is one of the good guys.
Damn that's a good looking truck at a good price. Unfortunately, I'm probably 6 months out - I'm going to be laid up for several months with some medical stuff right after the new year, and I need to sell my current house in that time period, so I'm looking at April/May to start shopping assuming all goes well.
That looks like a good buy. Early this year I was number 2 in line for a very similar black 4WD V-10 Limited. Number 1 was wise enough to buy it before I could.
