I just tore my 87 bronco with a 351w down and am putting a new cam in it When I took the rockers off I discovered that they screw in they dont have studs in the head. That makes them non adjustable.THe cam I bought is a crane powermax cam. The valve lift is 456 Intake and 484 exhaust with a duation of 272.I bought new valve springs for that cam. What my question is can I install screw in studs and buy adjustable type rockers.Summit Racing Parts says I have to buy a conversion kit for a hundred dollars and thats just studs and guide plates. THey also told me I will have to change pushrods and to determine the right length before I can even order them. He said I couldnt use the old ones. I have never had this problem before. It seems to me if I bought the studs that would change them over to adjustable style and then i could buy the rockers and maybe use the old pushrods> I would appreciate any help I can get. Im running out of money and this simple project has already cost me 800.00. I sure could use some advise.
If your looking to save money why not just put the new cam and lifters in and just use the stock rockers and pushrods? That amount of lift should not be a problem with the stamp steel rockers. I have used a bigger cam than that with stock stamp steel rockers before and never had any problem. Note: I never revved the motor past 6500 but it's not normally necessary to do so in a street motor anyway.
Bolt it up and go.
I cant adjust the valves.the stock rockers have a bolt that just torques down on the rocker tower. there is no adjustment. If you need to adjust valve lash you have to use oversized pushrods. I want the old style rockers that have studs and you can adjust the valve lash
Even with a mild hydrualic cam, stock pushrods may be too long. They are for mine. That's the problem I've been chasing for a long time. I hooked up the compressor to fill my cylinders and had it leak out the intake and exhaust. Removed the rockers and it held the air with no leak at all. And this was with 120psi.
I am also going the Crane adjustable valvetrain conversion route. They cost $90. The reason you can't just add studs is you have pedestal mount rockers. The new ones will replace the bolt with a stud that is the correct length. They have an integral guide plate that uses nylon inserts, so you can use your stock pushrods as long as they are in good shape. I don't see why they told you that you had to buy new ones. According to Crane there's no need.
I should get my kit and new valve springs in today, but I have to wait another week for the rockers. I still haven't decided which ones to get anyway.
What money pit said is 100% correct. I ran into the same problem when I decided to change cams. $600 later, I had crane Energizer rockers, Chromemoly pushrods (not needed, but only ones I could find in the appropriate sized I needed for the cam), Crane stud conversion kit, trick flow valvetrain upgrade kit. I figured it costed me an extra grand just to do the cam, but considering I upgraded everything along the way, it doesn't seem quite so bad.
