Right now I am running 40 inch tires with a 22 inch rim on my 02 Ford Excursion. My tires are pretty bald and I'm looking to downsize a bit to 38 Super Swampers with a 16-inch rim, this is my question. I'm not sure what kind of gearing I have on the Excursion right now because I bought it as is, should I be running a special gears while running a 38 inch tire on my Excursion or is there plenty enough horsepower for me to pull it. PS I have the 6.8 liter V10
Stock 3.73 gears on stock 31" tires would put you at about 1970 RPM @ 70 mph
So if you want similar gearing you would run a 4.56 with 38" tires 1956 RPM @ 70 mph but i would probably go with a 4.88 for 2100 RPM @ 70 mph.
Worst that can happen ? You could hit a bus load of nuns and school children and burst into flames, but what will likely happen is you will burn up transmissions quickly by using stock gearing.
Thx for the response! Just to clarify this is not a mudding/trailing vehicle. This is my daily driver! If going to a different gear do I just simply swap out or do I need to change axles and all that crap aswell!
changing gears in your axle is a little more involved then just removing and replacing them but yes, you just need new gears not new axles or crap.
New bearings are worth considering when changing gears but I'll let the you decide if those are consider crap or not.
What gearing should I be running? And if im running stock gears what the worst that can happen?
I offered a suggestion of 5.13 gears in your other thread asking this same question the other day. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...need-help.html
The 5.13 gears will give you an effective 4.27 ratio with the new 38"s. that should be a pretty good combo with the new ratio nearly matching the great factory option of 4.30. I regeared from the stock 3.73s to 4.88s with 35" tires for an effective 4.39 ratio, it was without question the best performance upgrade I have done to my EX.
Before you start spending your money, I think its time to determine exactly what gears you are running currently. If you have 3.73 I would imagine the V-10 is a real dog with those giant 40"s. You can figure the current ratio by using the link Pirate supplied or jacking up the rear and counting tire rotations vs driveshaft turns (by hand of course).
I didn't follow the traditional regearing route, I bought a set of axles from an '02 Ex that were already setup with 4.88s for $1200. In my area the going rate for a shop to do both front and rear differentials with new gears and bearings runs $2000/2200.
What are your current RPMs at a given speed with your setup with the 40"s?
Just re geared my 02 and put the newer rear diff cover, Ford did the work for $3,333 front and rear 4.10's. I paid for the trutrac to put in the rear that was $600. 3 year warranty.
