Back up lights not working on 2004 E350
I have no idea what to look for the switch or wire. Can someone tell me where to look for the switch on the transmission or have a photo.
I have a back up beeper on this van that is connected to the back up lights. The beeper works when the lights work.
Thanks,
Mark
I realize this post post may not be helpful to you but I'm dying to ask if your reverse beeper makes a faint ticking noise when it "doesn't work". Can't hear it from inside the van until you've heard it from outside (at which point your ears are "tuned in" for the sound). Even then it's hard to hear except quiet environments.
I have checked and cleaned the beeper connections a few a few times and no improvement. It just randomly works/doesn't work. Sometimes it will start/stop working during a backup.
If so, back-up alarms do fail after time, most I've gotten out of one was maybe 5-6 years, just replace it with a new unit.
To answer your real question, on the drivers side of the transmission, you'll find the Neutral Safety Switch / Range Sensor (NSS) that controls about what the name is........ The connector can be corroded or the wires.
If your having problems with the shifting, or the trans going into the correct gear, this would be caused by a bad NSS.
Should look like this -
Does the neutral safety switch control the back up lights?
Most of the problems are the NSS itself, inside corrosion, burned contacts, The connector can become corroded, and in some cases, I've tapped off the correct wire for the back up lights, and ran a new wire back to tie into the back up light circuit.
Other problems to look for, sloppy shiftier on the steering column, there a "shiftier" tube that the bushing wears out, or the 4 screws holding the shiftier tube become loose, you'll notice this more with the shiftier indicator not sitting in the proper place on the dash, then the shift cable is not turning the NSS in the correct contact, the trans will shift into reverse, but the NSS will not be at the correct location, if you notice the picture, the mounting holes are somewhat large, to allow for adjustment on the mounting.
I think I over explained this........
The Back-up alarm is a good thing, it's needed on DOT vehicles, over 10,000 # and in my case, on job sites, it's required as a OSHA rule.
