I have had that same one for 4 years now. Love it! When I ordered it I had them leave off all but 4 of the cleats. They sent them to me, but didn't drill or install them.
the *only* thing I don't like about it, is that it is hard to load/unload stuff that is in the front half of the box in the middle. Too far to reach from the sides, I have to get in the box and crawl under the center divider. Before I got my 5th wheel, I would load the entire bed with firewood for camping. Now I only use the Diamond Back in the winter months.
I figured I could use it for storage and put the 4 wheeler on top while pulling the camper. Till now there was no room with the wheeler and camper. I do see a 5th wheel in the future and figured I could carry the cover with me and put it on after I am set up.( I use my camper to live in while working out of town). It would keep things more secure.
Mike that's a good idea. As for using with the 5th, I was contemplating that too. the problem is the center part that's clamped to the bed is right where the hitch is. I haven't tried it, but pretty sure it will be in the way, since both are right over the axle. I've resorted to only using my cover in the non-camping months, which in Michigan is about now until April.
I love that lid though, I can secure items in there, and lock it, etc which is a must when we go skiing, so that I can lock the equipment up back there. Easy to remove the individual lids when necessary. Somewhat of a PITA to remove/reinstall the center piece squarely.
I'm not trying to dissuade you from utilizing the lid that they advertise you to be able to do, but you might PM cabindoc (Scott) to see if he ever definitively determined what caused his problem.
I bought one a few months ago and forgot to post a pic.
I really like mine too so far but I haven't loaded my ATV's on it yet. My plan was to use the cover to transport my ATV's to the trail heads. I did use it a few times for a place to sit and use my spotting scope a few evening.
Also, this is a pic with the cover sitting over the top of my B&W fifth wheel hitch while the hitch is installed in the back of the truck.
But, I do not have to remove the fifth wheel hitch once I get to wear I'm going.
I will bring the cover with me in the back of the toy hauler. Once we get to where we are going I will pull the Diamondback cover out and install it on the truck over the fifth wheel hitch. Takes a little extra time to install the clamps with the fifth wheel hitch still in the truck but not that much longer. This way, I don't have to load and unload that heavy a$$ hitch and it doesn't leave in the back of someone else truck while I'm away from our camping spot.
The cover locks down nice and tight. Could someone break into the back? Sure! Will they have a harder time doing it? You bet. I also have the tailgate auto lock sitting on the bench at home waiting to be installed. I'm hoping to get it done soon and that will make it even easier getting into the back. The tailgate open and closes without having to open the top too. To be honest, I will put our gear in the back locked up before I will leave it in the cab where it can be seen through the windows for a smash and grab.
I looked a long time before I decided on this cover. I tried to find a cover that would work with the fifth wheel hitch and fifth wheel hooked up but I couldn't find one. I figured this was the best option for what I was trying to do especially because I wasn't double trailering when we are headed to the mountains with the ATV's and the toy hauler.
These covers are expensive if you are buying the HD setup and with the ATV , UTV rails. The price tag will make you choke. I know I did. But, for me,the extra cost of the hard cover and being able to do what it claims you can do with them it was worth it after talking with guys I work with who bought the soft, roll up type covers and what they paid for them.
I know it was a good thing I was sitting down when I found out the price. Took me a few months to finally pull the trigger. I'm not sure how much Atv hauling I will actually do but having the option is nice.
