i have a 03 with 5.4 4x4 with 212,000 mi, had both exhaust manifolds trued and gaskets and nuts and bolts replaced last year. started hearing what sounded like another manifold leak last month. so i had a week off and decided to tune the truck up and fix all the little things that were wrong. so after the tune up i crawled under the truck with a stethoscope with a hose attached and herd what sounded like a exhaust leak at the front cat on both sides. the rear were ok . has anyone ever herd of this? can they be repaired or do i replace them ? if i replace them can i go with the magnaflow and just have one cat on each side and not get a cel?

thanks for any advice
Short answer is, yes you can replace them with after market catalytic convertors (CC). And yes you should able to just have 1 per side and long as there is the upstream & downstream O2 sensor bung.
That comes with big BUT or DEPENDING. So here it is, BUT or DEPENDING... if you do this you need to be aware that "some states" do not pass annual vehicle inspections with after market CC's...some states, (most) do allow it as long as the exhaust deposits are within the recommended limits. Some states don't have annual inspections until you trade it in or sell it, then it potentially could hurt your value of your truck. Point is here, check with your local laws before you do. It could save you from having to do it over again if your local laws are more particular.
How does it run otherwise? The noise you hear could be a sign that the interior of the CC is breaking up ,or loose, and causing more back pressure. ?
A reasonable exhaust shop should be able to test for this.
The other thing is, that you need to check your motor mounts and trans mount. Worn mounts can flex and move too much and then put extra pressure/strain on the exhaust causing it to crack and leak.

Reason: more
truck runs well especially after the tune up. trans mounts are fine . motor mounts i need to check. i think it is the miles and i bought it from a guy that lived in the mountians and they arent afraid to use salt on the roads in the winter that may have rotted the metal on the casing . i will check the local laws on emissions .
