Question for anybody that knows their power steering pumps -
I know GM runs a lot more pressure through their power steering systems than Ford does. However, what's the difference between Ford and Mopar ?
Specifically - Can one use the stock power steering pump from say...a 90 F150 (302 pwrd) on a 84 Chrysler 5th Avenue power steering box?
Why? - It would mean not having to work out installing a fat (serpentine style) pulley on the Mopar pump and then fabing a mount to line it up with the other pulleys on the Ford engine.
So,....anbody using a Ford power steering pump on the Mopar power steering box in their "Volare" style IFS?
I've been told that the pressures are close enough not to worry about. A guy at cruise night asked me why I had a chrysler pump when the ford would work fine. I told him I just didn't know better. I'm sure somebody here has a ford pump with a volare clip and will confirm this. Good luck, Rich.
Use the Ford pump. I bought a new Ford PS hose for the high pressure side, and had a Chrysler end installed. You will have one finger steering. Steering has the Crown Vic car feel to it rather than a Mustang performance feel. But that shouldn't bother a girly motor guy like you.
The stock Ford brackets holding the pwr steering pump seem to be cast aluminium and with the serpentine belt system will look pretty good all cleaned up. The mods mentioned to adapt the Chryco pump would have nessissitated something not as asthetically pleasing and I'm sure a bear to get right.
My only concern now is if the 302 will have the power to propel the truck and the power steering pump itself at the same time. Ah, but Daryl "Butch 302" Stone assures me these motors are a powerhouse so I guess it'll be fine.

Some aftermarket heads will be required to drive the power steering. But Carl told me I would need a small nitrous kit whenever the air conditioner is on so the engine won't die.
Sure, just when I'm enjoying a moment of bliss after learning of Fergies mod's like my 302, then "wham"... it ends on this post!
"Powerhouse".... ok, not quite. But, only few will argue that the 302 is NOT a good ol' reliable workhorse. I guess my 15 minutes of fame are over and the bashing has recommenced... Yeah, baby yeah!
Nitrous eh? Hmmm. Think I'd prefer a lo-pro supercharger; keep my lil' workhorse off the bottle
Well, we'll see what improvements the Ford Racing GT-40 heads & full roller rockers + Comp Cam cam/lifter kit make early next month (after payday, don'tcha know!)

Daryl you misunderstood. Fergy Bashing season never closes. At least not anymore.
Not only does he go 302, but he buys a speed density engine. Factory programmed to resist all attempts to make it run like a 351W. Oh I'm loving this like he'll never truly comprehend. I've endured over a year of bashing from our friend from the north. We'll be even sometime in late 2005 by my calculations.
we are running the stock (85 Crown Vic) power steering pump on my son's 63. It has the Chryco front suspension also.
FYI...the Crown Vic hose fit with the only modification needed was to bend the steel pipe on the box end for clearance.
I hate it because, running a 302, if I am turning the steering wheel and the A/C clutch engages, the decelleration almost throws me through the windshield.
Seriously, I have about 80K miles running the Cordoba box and a Ford plastic housing pump. With no cooler and at nominal pressure, I ruined 3 sectors and about that many pumps and lines. I have one pump housing that is blistered.
I ended up cutting 1 complete coil out of the pump pressure relief valve spring and adding a 70's metal housing pump style cooler. It still could use a bit less pressure.
Are you smoking pumps or Volare PS steering boxes? Thanks for posting, that's good info to know. I know my truck will one finger steer, even at a crawl speed. I guess I should have known there would be a catch with Lincoln Town Car steering comfort.
Perhaps we can spoon feed the Fergster and he'll have black marks on the road in front of his house too. He can tell both his friends they were caused by doing hole shots. (rather than engine engine drag down when he turns up his sub woofers and the alternator kicks in high) It's worth a try I guess.
"Gee, maybe we should try to identify the actual PSI of the two respective pumps........"
We could I suppose. But to tell you the truth, I was quite content with my luxury car steering until you came along with this thread and created another problem I didn't even know I had. I believe I will probably do nothing until Scot tells me it will screw up my PS box if I don't.
I too, would like to hear more detail about Scot's problems with the power steering but I'd like like to know approx. how many miles Dewayne has driven without these problems.....
Anyone else using the Ford-Mopar power steering combo?
Later,
P.S. - Where the heck has Rage been for the past few months?
