Forgot to mention, a set of "checker" springs are cheap & may or may not be of use to you as well.

Thought about getting some aftermarket valve covers, but I think I'll just reuse the stockers and have them and the intake powder coated. will they clear the 1.7 rockers?

Crane 1.7 roller rockers clear stock truck valve covers.

I'm going to order new bolts for everything. Looking at the lower intake I see two studs that the coil bracket bolts to. Do these also serve to bolt down the intake, or are they threaded into the intake only? Intake is held down with 10 bolts?

The studs that the coil bracket bolts to do in fact also serve as lower intake hold downs.

If you're going with new rod & main bearings bolts make sure the rods are resized and the block line honed. Are you using ARP?

Only changing out the heads at this time, and yes using ARP bolts for everything. Those studs look skinny and brittle to me, I'm sure they're going to snap. I know the intake bolts have an under head length of 2", so those studs must be around 5" total length because they look to stick up above the intake about 3". Where would a fella find new replacements?

The threads are exposed to oil in the lifter galley. I've never had them give me any trouble. The forward most intake bolts are the problematic bolts in my experience, I'm 1 for 3 on snapping those off in the heads.

Picking up heads today. Seats ground, new stainless valves, new springs, slightly decked, guides were good. Will be placing an order for the following:

Head gaskets
Upper & lower intake gaskets, valve cover gaskets
Arp head bolts, intake bolts, header bolts and valve cover bolts
Arp thread chaser, moly lube and thread sealant
Crane 1.7 rockers

All I can think of, am I missing anything?

Stock rotating assembly right? Which head gasket thickness are you planning on? This will determine squish because the pistons on a stock bottom end should have zero deck clearance. Ideal squish is between 0.035"-0.045". Stock head gasket was 0.039".

Did the shop install new valve seals on your heads?

I may have missed it, but what brand of gaskets will you use? Did you find the correct studs for the lower intake?

Yes, new seals. I was under the impression the stock head gasket is .047? I chose Fel-Pro 9333PT1, which is .047. I know the heads were surfaced, but I don't know how much yet.

Fel-Pro 9333PT1 head gasket
Fel-Pro MS 94951 manifold set

On the intake studs, spoke with arp and they didn't have anything, so I'll try and salvage the two stockers

Looking at this head gasket also https://www.summitracing.com/parts/mrg-5807g/overview/
It's .038 thickness. I've been told the GT40 heads deliver 9.0 compression with stock head gaskets. I'm fine with anything between 9.0 and 9.5 These are double the price of the Felpro's. Not sure how much these would bump compression?
