The 2.7L in a Screw with the Sport package really handles the truck well and with the coming 10 speed what a machine for all around F150 isms. I believe with the 3.73 ELD and the overdrives the 10 speed has it will be an awesome package for most all drivers.
From checking out the towing ratings on fords website guide, seems about 1 ton difference in towing between the 2.7EB and the 3.5EB.. Has anyone actually towed with both engines? I'd only be towing occasionally and they have some good deals on the letover 16 2.7 equipped trucks but I don't want to be disapointed with the performance or have the truck being constantly hunting for the best gear.

Haven't towed with both, but I don't think you'd have problems hunting for gears with the 2.7L. More torque and power than the old 5.4L V8 that was rated to tow 11,000 lbs in its day.
I suggest that you test drive both. But, The 2.7 seems more than capable. Also, the 3.5 appears to only be available on the more expensive models. So, you have to ask yourself how much more money you want to pay for a marginal increase in towing capability that you may not ever need. Jag
Over the last two months, I checked the on-line inventory of just about every Ford dealer in SoCal. The majority of the leftover 2016 F150s had 3.6L NA engines. The XL models also had many 2.7L engines. But, the 3.5Ls were found in the XLTs and Lariats. One sales lady said that they ordered them exclusively for their more expensive models. Jag
I have a 2015 2.7 with 3.73's and love it. I traded in my 04 5.4 and was hesitant in buying a 2.7. I actually went to look at a 3.5EB and now after 1 year and 17,000 mi I couldn't be happier. My father and father in law have both driven it and couldn't believe it was a 2.7. MPG's around 23/24 on the highway maybe slightly lower than a 2.7 with the 3.55.
I had an 08 with the 5.4 liter. I always considered that engine to be "adequate" and nothing more. I now have the same truck package wise, gearing etc. with the 2.7 EcoBoost and it would embarrass my 2008 in every aspect. Performance is not even close. 14 MPG vs 20 MPG...... To the OP, if you are buying a 2wd truck in anything under a SuperCrew, you would probably "okay" with the base 3.5 liter. The 2.7 would just take that satisfaction to an ear to ear grin level....

I have 3:55s. I really wanted the 3:73 gears just couldn't find them. In April I'm thinking of pulling the Cougar out to Tulsa so that will be the real test.
