Unhappy 4 Wheel Drive

Driving along today and bumped the 4 wheel drive buttton ok no problem only going about 10 mph. So I reach out and push the button to turn it off and the light goes out but the truck still drives like it's in 4 hi. Steers like **** and now that the light is of there is a faint clunking sound out of the front end and it is speed related. Can anyone please help me?

Back up at least 10' to unlock the hubs. Then you'll be totally out of 4WD.

You should pull those auto hub locks and install manuals before those blow up. Click my signature and look in the Brakes & Hubs album.

great pics, I recently purchased my first bronco and was wondering on the avg what a manual lock conversion would cost, and is the auto lock failure a common problem? I am going through the truck doing the general maintenance that has been neglected for years and was planning on re-packing the wheel bearings, etc. and would go ahead and do the conversion if it won't break the bank. Thanx in advance.

cost is about $250. incl installation and the hubs...in a high labor area such as NYC, etc.
For less than that you can diy and also buy a torque wrench and hub sockets & have some $ left for brakes or other stuff

I want to do it myself, so where is the best place to get the parts? My bronco is an '87 so was it a factory option to have the auto locks? Just wondering if I can just go to local auto parts store and ask for manual hubs for an '87 ? if not, what should I ask for?

You should be able to get a set of milemarker or warn premiums from any of the usual sources (ebay, jc Whitney, summit, etc). A local auto parts store may or may not have the quality stuff you should be using.

From summit web site:

MMK-402
$65.95

Vendor: Mile Marker
Product Line: Mile Marker Conversion Kits and Locking Hubs
Material: Steel
Finish: Chrome Plated

The perfect hubs.

Chevy, GMC, Dodge, Plymouth, Ford, Jeep, International all with Dana 44 axle, chrome cap, Supreme locking hubs

This pair of Supreme hubs features all metal construction with chrome steel caps. They have 3/4 turn engagement, which is easier to engage than 1/4 turn hub mechanisms. These internal mount hubs fit most 1/2 ton pickups with Dana 44 front axles.

Sold in pairs.

Does this seem like a good set and price? I am assuming that I have a Dana 44 axle, not for sure though. Did any other front axles come in the '87? How can I identify the Dana 44? Thanx in advance for the responses.

All '80-'96 Broncos came from the factory with a Dana 44. So unless someone went to the trouble of swapping it out for something else, that's what you have.

I'm not sure those will work for you, as per this thread. Sorry to break the bad news to you.

Good luck with that.
