I have a 74 Ranger F100 that i just did a motor swap in(302). I also put a new battery, alternator, starter selenoid in. When we hooked up the alternator up the field and stator leads got reversed somehow . I realized this because every 4 days my battery died. I got this corrected and we started the truck and the ammeter which was not working prior started working but it pegged all the way over to the "C" while it was running. I drove the truck to the house the same night with the ammeter pegged over. The next morning when I cranked up the ammeter pegged over then settled in between the middle mark and the "C" which seemed a little more normal.
Since then it bounces eratically from the "C" to the middle mark and in between and some times it settles down about an 1/8 " form the center mark. I have my suspicions about the regulator but wanted to get some opinions from you guys. As a side note when any lights are on they change brightness with higher RPMs
go buy yourself a decent volt meter and check the ouput voltage at the battery when first started and it should be around 15 volts. It will eventually fall back but should stay around 14 until you start turning on the electrical appliances in your truck. I took some 6 gauge, stranded house wire and ran some extra grounds and bonded each side of the truck to the ground on the battery. The metallic conductivity of a 25 year old truck is considerably LESS than when it was new. this in turn will impede the free flow of electrons in all the various circuits on your truck. sk
