Taking that long to get a fix puts the value of the initial purchase in a somewhat negative light, if that is typical, IMHO.

One can see why Mueckster (sp) and Bad Dog Kuzz rebuilt their own transmissions. If there is ever a problem, their rebuilder isn't that far away, and they have complete control over their rebuilder's schedule and priorities.

It took 4 weeks for me to get a tranny from Swamps for my 02. If this was a work truck, that time frame would not have been acceptable. (It did make me drive my semi-retired E99 work truck though. Need to keep up on how to drive a handshaker!) I know builders like BTS, Swamps, John Woods, do a few things that no body else does. It's more than just replacing parts with better parts. It's more than just tuning. But, you're tied to their schedule.

BTS, JW, and Swamps may indeed have their secret sauces, but not everyone can attend their backyard barbeque. Circumstances like KJNDIVER and Epsilon highlight the fact that we need that sauce in a bottle, available at the local grocery everywhere, and in 7-11 on the weekend, so we can roll again on Monday.

I believe some of that sauce involves a few custom made parts made in-house, and/or some modifications to existing parts. I certainly don't disagree with you, but I don't ever see it happening.

While these premier transmission builders do use some "one off" parts of their own, many "over the counter" performance/HD parts are available, along with some "DIY" mods, that make some very reliable upgraded builds. Some of the upgrade parts, I purchased from JW, were those produced by a third party vendor. It's not all about the parts, but also an attention to detail that makes a substantial difference in the quality of the work.

I hesitate to post this because my case is atypical and doesn't apply, but here it is anyway.

Earlier this year the JW built 4R100 lost about 98% of reverse gear. It would barely back up on flat ground and that was with 4L engaged.

I made an appointment with John and drove it down to his shop back in May (IIRC) and had John go through the trans. He pulled the transmission and rebuilt about 85% of it with replacement/upgraded parts. He replaced the torque convertor with a better unit, flushed my transfer case, and provided a 6.0L trans cooler kit for my F250 (the Ex already has one) and I couldn't have been happier with the service.

So, while I can't discuss or divulge the total cost, I will say after almost ten years and over 100k miles, I felt blessed the cost was not much, much higher.

Good thing JW's shop was ahead of you. If it were behind you, you'd have been in trouble.

We learned to deal with it for the 3 or so months I put off getting it fixed.

This is why I opted for the HD4R100 from a Ford dealer. I think it was over $1500 less than the other bespoke units. Granted, my first go at it had a failed torque converter soon after I drove it home. Ford dealership covered the tow back to the the dealership (twice, because they couldn't find the intermittent problem while they had it the first time, and I drove it home again until it failed for good), the replacement transmission, and a rental truck for almost 2 weeks (waiting for the replacement unit).

Hmmm, I put in my own HD4R100 in my driveway, and I added a JW valve body and HD triple disc TC to it. No problems needing a tow anywhere since...25k miles on it so far and still shifting great. If it breaks, I will fix it.

Knocking on wood right now.
