Ya, that's what I'm looking for. I'm going to pull the computer tonight and have it sent back off, but I want to eliminate any other "possible" scenarios. I'll clean those grounds and see if that has any affect. Also, what about the fuel pump relay...could that play any part in this whatsoever? Sticking on...anything at all? or is it a non factor?
As RLA and myself believe the PCM is at fault, have you tried pulling codes?
What your saying that it starts fine, then goes back to limp mode the next day is weird. I just wonder if it can communicate and give codes as well.
It may just be a mute point now though.
Check the grounds as RLA mentioned and see what effect that has.
ok, that makes sense. So i'll check the grounds tonight and if that has no affect, then it comes down to the ECU NOT telling the fuel pump to turn off, and NOT telling the injectors to pump fuel.
Thank you!
The computer's circuits are designed so that the fuel pump circuit is energized by default. When the computer "wakes up", it turns the fuel pump off. If the fuel pump runs continuously, it means the computer is not "waking up" or waking up correctly.
Went ahead and cleaned up all the grounds last night. Had one ground bolt snap in half, so after fixing that, I cleaned everything up real nice and gave her a go and no difference. By that time my fingers were frozen from working in 8 degree weather and dinner was ready, so I'm going to pull the computer tonight and have it sent back off. Thank you everyone for your input on this! I'll update after I get the computer back and let you know how she works.
Thanks!
Trust me, if that were a possibility I would have done that. There were so many different serial #'s for this computer and you have to get the correct one. I checked parts stores all over and they can't get them, ford can't get them, and I checked wrecking yards in Washington, Oregon, Texas, California, the east coast...couldn't find one anywhere.
I do not recall if you ever posted the numbers off the computer. Something like E9TZ/E9TF-12A650-XXX or something similar. These PCMs are not necessarily that specific to work in your application. I believe there are some alternatives.
What in the truck can cause the computer to fail? Anything else that I should be tracking down in addition to the computer? Here is the label off mine...going to suck if there is an alternative...I'm already out $140 from having this one rebuilt...
F1TFA-AFA is a PCM with California emissions. That's why it's a bit tougher to find. Rockauto has Cardone brand (personally not a favorite) for ~$87. There is a whole list of compatible PCMs for this engine/transmission combination with the one caveat they are all Federal emission versions.
If you do not live in California I would snap up one of the more common versions.

Just in case you get desperate & go this route... (price is hard to beat)
When my PCM was crapping its capacitors & I got a Cardone from Rock, there was NO packing material. Computer > loose in Cardone box > loose in Rock shipping box.
The Cardone had its board semi-glued in the upper case & I added some std. computer case screws.
It did work, but as soon as I could get mine re-capped, it went back in & the Cardone is on the shelf as a spare. Truck does seem to do better with repaired original
