Exclamation My Plan...

I have the 300 I6 and need to replace my exhaust system. I was planning to go from my first cat with 2.5" pipe into a Carsound Highflow Catalytic Converter and then 2.5" pipe into a Dynomax single 2.5" inlet, single 2.5" outlet Super Turbo muffler with 2.5" tail pipe. I plan to replace my manifolds and first cat with a header, but money is a little tight right now so it'll have to wait. How does this setup sound?

I am still debating what do do with tail pipes. I would like to have dual tail pipes but if they present too much hazard I can go without. I want to keep them safe and not have to worry about buying a new set of tips everytime I go driving. I have a short box '91 F-150 and I do my share of off-road driving. Any suggestions?

Sounds like a good setup that will have a nice sound to it. I don't think you should waste money on a header. I've heard the I-6 stock manifolds are very free flowing.

I've heard that too, but my exhaust guy told me that I would want one if I wanted "maximum" performance and the best sound. I've also heard that my stock (second) cat is faily high flowing and I wouldn't notice a ton of change going with an aftermarket high flow. Maybe I could just try to refurbish the one I have right now? If both of these happens to be true then I would not bother with changing my pipe to 2.5" ( I only wanted to go to 2.5" because I thought that it would work better with a header installed) and just stick with what I have (2.25") all the way back. What is your opinion on these little rumors? Will I still get the same or near the sound if I stuck with stock manifolds and cats and stock exhaust pipe diameter?

Your second cat isn't really that free flowing. I cut mine off and put a piece of pipe in its place and got lots of all around power and the sound is much deeper now. I think a single 2.5" pipe would be better all around as well.

So what about the header? Is it going to do anything for me other than empty my pockets? If not, would keeping that first cat on there and then getting a 2.25" to 2.5" adapter to fit the pipe to go into my new cat and muffler be alright?

I am honestly not that familiar with the stock I6 manifold and an aftermarket header.
On my exhaust the inlet into the second cat is 3" and I'm not sure if yours is the same also because my motor is different. Do you have emissions testing?? If not then I wouldn't even worry about spending money on a highflow cat.

I live in Idaho and there are no emissions tests. I just have to get past my dad if I want to go without a cat. If I can, I will just go with new pipe from where the cat was into my muffler. If not, I'll spend the extra $40 for a high flow cat.
A few more questions:
Can removing your cat ever do more bad than good?
Any suggestions for tail pipe(s) location?

Removing my cat made my exhaust stink but the smell is well worth the increased power and sound. I have mine exiting in front of my rear passenger tire because its easier for me to do it that way and I like the way it looks.

Wait to do your exhaust until you do the headers first. The headers will make a differance. My tailpipes are on a 45 after the rear wheels with 4"x 18" tips. I turned my tips so they are flush with the bodyline of the truck. Haven't hit they off-road yet.

I don't want to go with dual exhaust. I noticed that the headers I've seen for the 4.9 is 2 sets of 3 cylinders so you could dual it off. Are there headers with a 6 into 1 pattern or am I going to be forced to buy a custom y-pipe? If so, how much can I plan on adding to the final cost?

akford351, how noticable was the smell when you went without the cats? I really don't want to hear comments on how my truck stinks.

dk5122, what do you mean you turned your tips so they are flush with the bodyline of your truck?

The opening of the tip is cut on a angle the tip is flush when you look down the side of the rear corner of the bed. I didn't want my exhaust out the rear of the truck.

My Plan...

My buddy has a six in his 96 F-150. After the headers he used a Flowmaster y-collector with a 3" outlet to a high flow cat to a 40 series original Flowmaster muffler 3" in to dual 2.25" out then the tailpipes. He does some towing with the truck "18' camper" the new exhaust really made a differance in power.
Good luck, Dan

So if I were to actually find the right header for my truck, I would also have to get the y-collector if I wanted to keep it single exhaust. Right? And a ceramic coated header with the collector would be about $200? Then a cat would be about $50 with S&H. The muffler would be about $50 also. Which brings me to about $300. How much can I expect to pay for 2.5" pipe, labor, the y-pipe and tips if I decided to go with dual tail pipes? Is this money I'm going to spend worth it on a 12 year old truck with 127k miles on its straight 6?
