Frame rivits

I've noticed that I've got a few frame rivits comeing loose where the rear spring brackets meet the frame. I've been thinking about grinding them out, and replacing them with grade 8 bolts but I want to put another camper back on after I get the frame straightened. Sound like a good idea? Anyone out there ever had a similar rivit problem? And if so, how did you fix it?

I would think that the bolts should be fine. I have never had a rivet come loose.

The thing to do is get bolts long enough so the shank (without the threads) just fits the holes, even if you have to ream them to a size larger and tap them in with a rubber mallet. Then cut the longer bolt down some to fit. Put a nut or thread cleaner on the bolt before you cut it so taking the nut off cleans the cut thread.

You need a washer on the bolt side and nut side. I do not think you need to use a lock washer if you torque the bolt/nut correctly.

For rear spring hanger brackets, not front end components, I would use red lock-tite on the bolt threads.

Grade 8 will work great as long as you torque them correctly. For 1/2" you should be going to at least 90-100 foot pounds.

Good idea using Locktite, I hadn't considered that. I was planning on using Nylock nuts (aircraft nuts) instead of lock washers. Sound good? I'm probably just needlessly worrying about the safty of bolts vs. rivits.

I think the rivits were stretched when I was rear ended by a bobtail truck awhile back. Not alot of apperent dammage to my truck (mangled bumper, and a few cab dents) but a ton of dammage to his rig. I'm starting to think I've got a bent frame on the truck tho. My camper lists to the driver side now

I've had the truck to the scales, and there's no real weight difference left to right, or front to back. I've even switched the rear springs left to right thinking one had collapsed a bit, and it still lists the same way. As soon as I can get $1k scraped together, I'll have it checked and fixed.
