Ford Sync

Ford Sync
Maybe this belongs in the accessories thread but many of you have the sync system on your trucks. My truck is a 2012 and I can't stand the sync system any longer - I know I've waited long enough - plus I detest the fact I have to subscribe to the app section to find gas stations and such. Has anyone replaced their sync system with an after market one and if so which one? I use an Iphone and loved the rental I used that had the Apple sync or whatever it's called. I want it to fit exactly in the space where my console unit is and be able to use voice and steering wheel controls. I don't mind the after market systems interface so long as I can toggle into my apple settings? Don't know if that makes sense.
For reference I have a 2-12 Lariat edition.
Thanks for your input.

Just my opinion and I am not offended if you or anyone else disagrees... But here it is:
There are a lot of vehicle function tied up in the radio now and I wouldn't mess with it. Even in 2012 - I had a 2011 Lariat which I want to say has the same interface/radio yours does. I'm no factory Ford radio fan either and there is a class action lawsuit going on against Ford for their sucky sync system.
If you REALLY REALLY gotta have another radio interface there are companies that can do it and make it so you don't lose the functions you "need." I haven't found one that is affordable. If you don't like paying the $100 or so a year (if you pay for a year in advance) to get fuel prices and live weather maps, is paying $1500 - $2000 to use your apple stuff really worth it?
I can't remember the company off hand, but there was one that would send you a "kit" to mount an iPad in the center stack and all the cables... It looked "Factory" too. I was pretty sharp looking, but not sure they are in business and how it all worked out. I only casually looked at it and until you posted this, I actually forgot about it.
What I really suggest: Most of us just get a mount and bring a tablet with us or in my case I got a mount and put my phone in it every time I drive, I bluetooth to the radio...

Don't worry about offending me or apple for that matter (see what I just did?). Mounting an Ipad is not in the cards either I just pay too much for a phone that is useless to me while driving - other than using bluetooth to talk - and Siri is an absolute idiot IMO, she never gets anything right. Guess I'm either tired of my screen or itching to spend more money.

You might want to check and see if you can flash your sync 2 system to the latest firmware....v3.8. Might help.

I used to always put "lockpicks" in my vehicles and the latest ones for our trucks 2011 and up are pretty sophisticated. So another option might be to try one of those so you can put whatever you want on the screen.
Coastal-e-tech is the manufacturer that makes them...
Since I am not really annoyed by mine any more it was out of my thought process earlier. I just learn to live with annoying, sub-par, tech equipment. Better than the old 2 dial radio I had in my 1990 Geo Storm.

It's an entire new unit, not just a software update. Sync3 is a hardware upgrade. "Upgrade" is subjective at this point, a lot of people still hate it.
