I am replacing our old W98 computer with a new one running XP. I can not figure out how I am going to get Norton Anti Virus and Zone Alarm Pro running on the new computer.
We have subscription services for both software, (NAV just renewed) but does anyone know how will I get these services running on the new computer?
Norton and Zone Alarm both have only FAQ and virtual support on their websites, and no live chat or phone support. FAQ and virtual support do not address what happens when you get a new computer in the middle of your subscription service.

I have the orig NAV cd. If I install that on the new computer, when I go to the NAV site, I don't know for sure what will happen, but that is the only way I can think to try it.

I've had problems with Zone Alarm and XP, don't think they like each other.

The subscription service is automatic. Because of information stored on my old computer, (which I never see), the Norton web site knows it's me when the software automatically updates virus definitions or renews yearly. (Just asks for current credit card at yearly renewal).
So I have a heads up on what to watch for, what are the problems you have had with Zone Alarm and XP?
I'd take Norton and burn it in my fireplace as a sacrifice to the computer gods who are responsible for all the virus(s) we've getting.. Norton is more trouble than its worth in my opinion. sk
I think there's something in the installation user agreement about "You agree to use this software on only one computer" et cetera, et cetera.
But then, as far as they know you scrapped the old one and bought new so that shouldn't matter - it can be looked at as "one computer at a time"...
The big issue is compatability. XP is specifically designed for NT type file structures, and the programs run on it have to be capable of running in that operating environment.
Sure would be nice if you had the box the software came in - it would have its compatabilities listed on the side. I don't know if there are seperate versions.

I am scrapping the old one. Reason this is an issue for us is that we bought a new computer. I do have the box and CD for Norton so I guess I will just install it on the new computer and try to get it updated and running from their website. It is supposed to work with XP. For Zone Alarm, purchase was a download from their web site, so I may be stuck buying it again..
Your norton program you used for 98 will not work on XP. You will find alot that wont install on XP ......Its a little different Bird ! This is my experience anyway. Get rid of XP and return to 98. Youll be much happier.
Do yourself a favor and skip all the money sucking U.S. based virus services. Try this http://www.f-prot.com. They have been around for a long time, you can run it from DOS to disinfect a Windows machine, and for $40 you can run it on up to 10 machines.
Plus, backup and even running it from a CD-ROM to clean an infected machine is a breeze. Best of all, it runs under WinNT server without paying sky high fees.
