Basic Mods

Howdy guys I'm pretty new at this modding stuff and I'm looking for some basic modifications I can do to my old 91 f150 302. I've already got plans to replace my intake, and a bigger throttle body, maybe some performance headers. Like I said though I'm pretty green at this so any help will be appreciated. Some basic things, I will not be doing an engine swap or any internal mods. Strictly bolt ons right now

I don't think that qualifies as a modification

On a serious note, welcome to the site. You'll find many more helpful folks than me, I'm sure.

I take it that the truck is mechanically sound enough to be ready for upgrades?

yes the truck is running well now. After a new plugs, wires, intake and valve cover gaskets, distributor cap and rotor kit, duralast ignition coil, when I took off the valve covers everything was in great condition

If you're just looking for something to do then fine but those two mods will net you a grand total of zero gains, with this vintage motor there is nothing even close to restrictive upstream of the camshaft. The exhaust on the other hand needs some work so knock yourself out just don't go too big or you will lose what little low rpm grunt this motor has, don't put anything bigger than 2.5" pipe on for a single exhaust or 2.25" if duals.

alright. Well one of the earlier replies said rocker arms so i might do the 1.7's on the exhaust valves only because that setup gave the best performance increase. And as far as the intake upgrades the truck is almost all original so it could use an update lol. Got this truck when I was 17 I'm now 19 and I've done all the work myself and I'm pretty sure I'm the best owner this thing has had. Like seriously when I got this truck it was misfiring, losing a quart a week, go 60miles on 3/4 of a tank, brakes barely worked, a/c didn't work, windows didn't work, bearings were shot all around, ignition coil, plugs and wires. I can do the work I'm looking for ideas cause like I said this is my first attempt at after market mods

Always improve the exhaust side before modding the intake side of the engine.

Slightly different kettle of fish for you to sniff over, but I just removed headers & 2-1/2" duals on my '78 351M. Headers leaked & rotting out, went back to manifolds, Y pipe + original muffler. No tail pipe; just loud enough so I can hear it. Maybe imagination but seems to run smoother now, especially just off idle. Definitely much better to drive.

That is a pretty good driving around gear for a truck with relatively stock sized tires, but if you want a bias more towards performance and/or if the tires are larger than 31" go to 4.10 or better.
