Contemplating 6.7
I've been following the issues with "jackhammer" in 2011-2013, but was surprised to see it pop up in 2015.
How prevalent is this issue in 2014-2016 MY 6.7's?
Is there a "best MY" to buy used for reliability?
What other issues are common with the 6.7 PSD?
Thanks,
The below list seems pretty evenly distributed among all MYs.
Radiator failures seem prone to a few trucks and once a truck has it, it seems to eat radiators. (no one has figured out why though)
Fuel pump failures. Personally, I believe most are due to poor fuel, DEF or water in Fuel. 2015+ got a revised fuel pump and turbo. 2015+ trucks also have more HP and supposedly operate better at altitude.
EGT and NoX sensor failures on stock trucks. Again, fairly rare, used to always result in a idle only event for the truck - with software updates in the past couple of years, now results in a warning/CEL and not always an idle. Although a lot of people carry an extra EGT sensor, 13MM wrench, and code reader/clearer.
CAC pipe blow outs - there is an aftermarket pipe available if this concerns you. Has happened to several people I know. Enough that it is something I am considering doing as preventative maintenance. Careful as some pipes require a programmer.
Vibration/Hopping - There is a fix out for this. As long as it really isn't your tires/suspension.
Jackhammering - Not sure that this was as apparent on 2011 - 2014 trucks. My 2015 had a mild case, a reflash cured mine. If the reflash doesn't, a Valve job is supposed to cure any 2015 or early build 2016 that didn't get the reflash in time. I had three different 2011s and never experienced it on those.
DEF level reset - For some reason, sometimes, people that constantly top off the DEF, the tank can be full, but the countdown to idle begins and won't reset. Most techs will say it's best to let the level go down far enough to read 1/2 full or less than 1/2 full and then fill up the tank so the computer sees a refill event. Never had this issue, sometimes I am topping off often and other times I let the compute tell me to refill the DEF.
There have been some reports of high altitude while pulling problems with the DPF (Exhaust filter), but not everyone that pulls heavy up high has an issue...
Tendency for a ground or cable near the parking brake to get loose and create havoc with the computer. Seems to be rare as well.

I can't think of anything else. Like I said, most are rare. I don't keep vehicles past a warranty, because I like steady monthly payments rather than none for a long period of time and then all of a sudden getting hit with a high repair bill. I do buy extended warranties so I can run the trucks longer than 3/36k. I trade up when I think my equity is at it's highest. Seems to be about every 4 years for me.
Really, this has been the most reliable truck platform I have had, period. Until this time, I never bought from the same manufacturer twice in a row. All of my issues have been minor annoyances. Like my window felt falling off (the part the mirror glides on), running boards peeling, and going in for recalls to fix problems I never had, and get an update to fix a minor one before it became a major one.

bruce....
Two questions.
One, what caused the valve dropping on the early11s?
two, What is jackhammering?

Thanks Bruce - I tried to summarize it as good as I could.
Jackhammering in this case is "valve" rattle. Mine was more like a slight miss and happens during the start of a regen event where fuel is dumped in the exhaust stroke so that raw diesel can get to the dpf and ignite. The "theory" is that carbon build up on the exhaust valves causes it. So the new program dumps fuel in to both banks and not just one and less fuel overall is dumped per cylinder. There is a VERY VERY long and controversial thread on this and I am just skimming the surface.
The early 2011s and mainly the C&C trucks had improperly heat treated valves. Ohh and I forgot one thing - the 2011 trucks also had a different type of glow plug that is susceptible to the tip breaking off on, so the suggestion is to change them every 60k miles instead of 100k miles. Not sure what year and build date they were changed to the new style.
