Power steering conversion linkage

Good afternoon,
I bought a 71 f100 this weekend to convert my truck over to PS with. I've read the article on the power steering conversion, but I have a question. Since I'm getting the PS out of the same model, can I just swap in the box and pitman arm, and not have to pull the drag link and such?
I know I'd have to with a 73+, but I couldn't find a different part number for MS vs PS in the parts catalog on those parts.

Thanks!

You can swap the box and pitman arm with no problem. Although the disc brake steering links are different from drum brake links, the pitman arm connection is the same. But the pitman arms are different and not interchangeable. The problem is with the column length. The power steering column is shorter to allow for the larger power steering box. You need either a power steering column, or you can shorten your manual column to fit. The difference is about 2.5".

No such thing as disc brake steering linkage and the OP isn't swapping in disc brakes.
OP bought a 1971 F100 2WD to swap the P/S .. F100 2WD's were not available with disc brakes until 1973.

The draglink with or without P/S is the same 1965/70 F100/250 2WD and 1971 F100/250 2WD before serial number M00,001.

1971 F100 2WD's from serial number M00,001 (last 6 digits of the VIN) and 1972 F100 2WD's use a different draglink, left tie rod and right tie rod end.

The P/S Pitman Arm is different than with M/S and 1971 F100 2WD's used two different P/S Pitman Arms:

C9TZ-3590-C (marked: C9TA-3590-E) = 1969/70 F100 2WD & 1971 F100 2WD before serial number M00,001 and...

D2TZ-3590-B (marked: D2TA-3590-BA) = 1971 F100 2WD from serial number M00,001 and 1972/79 F100 2WD & 1975/79 F150 2WD

I beg to differ. If you swap in later disc brake spindles, the center link and tie rods are indeed different. Therefore "disc brake steering links". I realize the OP is not doing that swap. I just added that for info. Although I don't have access to all the part numbers, everything I stated is true. Been there. Done that.

I do have access to all the part numbers. I've been looking these part numbers up in parts catalogs since these trucks were brand new.

The Pitman Arm, left tie rod and right tie rod end used on 1971 F100 2WD's from serial number M00,001 are the same thru 1979, also the same as 1975/79 F150 2WD

The 1973/79 F100 2WD & 1975/79 F150 2WD draglink is different.

The 1973/79 F100 2WD & 1975/79 F150 2WD draglink is different.
While I respect your knowledge and experience, the left outer tie rod, and the right tie rod, (center link, as there is no tie rod end on the right side) are different from bump side trucks to dent side trucks. The steering knuckle on disc brake trucks, 73 - 79 is thicker at the steering rod attachment point. Those later tie rods have a longer stem on the joint to allow for the difference. Looking at aftermarket replacements, there are different part numbers from 72 to 77. I realize this isn't what the OP is doing in this case. If you try to use 71 or 72 tie rods on 73 to 70 spindles, you can't thread the nut on far enough to put the cotter pin in. You must machine the spindle, the nut, or get 73 to 79 tie rods. I recently swapped 76 disc brake spindles onto my 72. I bought new links for everything for the 76 and compared the differences.
Check the part numbers again. They can't be the same for two different parts. Left outer tie rod and right tie rod or center link, whichever you want to call it.

I have a '70 that I'm wanting to convert to power steering as well. If I don't want to go to disc brakes, can I get the box and linkage out of a dentside and have it bolt up to the original drum brake spindles?

Only 1973/75 F100/250 4WD's came with front drum brakes.

Front disc brakes introduced in 1973 F100/250 2WD & F350 (1975 F150 2WD) as standard equipment. As standard equipment in F100/250 4WD in 1976.

Front disc brakes were optional in 1968/72 F250 2WD & F350.

If you're not changing to discs, you can simply swap the steering box and pitman arm, along with the steering column. The PS column is shorter than the manual column. The column can be shortened, but I haven't done that.
